Kate's Holidays '98 Story
"Holiday Story"

“It’s too small.” Andie said simply, moving on to the next tree. “Uh, too full.”

Pacey rolled his eyes. “Andie…” He wished he’d known what he had gotten himself into when he agreed to go with Andie to pick out a tree. Jack had warned him, but he didn’t listen. Pacey had just assumed that they would go to the tree farm, pick out a tree, and spend the rest of the afternoon decorating. Well, with little ‘quality time’ thrown in. Instead, Andie had spent almost an hour picking out the tree and wasn’t any closer to making a decision then when she started.

“Pacey! Excuse me for wanting a perfect tree for this Christmas when my holiday is going to be slightly less then perfect. I just want my mother to be happy, the tree is her favorite tradition. I thought you understood that this…” Andie began her tirade. She had the same speech anytime Pacey said something about how long it was taking her to decide.

“I know, Andie. God knows, I want you to have the best Christmas possible. But..” Pacey started.

“What!?” Andie said impatiently. Pacey prayed she wouldn’t get mad at him; she was starting to get that look in her eyes.

“But my toes are frozen!” Pacey said, knowing how lame his excuse was. Andie just raised her eyebrows.

“Fine. I want that one over there.” Andie pointed to a tree a few feet away. Pacey had to admit, it was one of the better ones he had seen in the miles of trees they had already looked at, but he knew that she was only doing it to make him feel guilty.

“Look, Andie. I didn’t mean to upset you. Just take all the time you want and pick out the perfect tree.” Pacey apologized. He gave Andie his pouty face, which he knew she couldn’t resist. Andie didn’t budge.

“Pacey, that’s the one I want. Now will you please chop it down before I change my mind?” She tapped her foot impatiently.

Now Pacey was confused. Was she serious about this tree? Was she still mad at him? Should he say anything or just cut down the tree?

“Women..” he muttered softly under his breath. “Andie, are you sure you’re not just picking this one because you’re mad at me?”

Andie rolled her eyes. “Pacey, do you really think I’d kill an innocent tree over a squabble with you?”

“Well, when you put it that way.” Pacey got down on the ground and proceeded to chop down the Christmas tree.

Later…

After spending ten minutes dragging the tree back to the front of the tree farm, Andie and Pacey were freezing.

“Hey! Great tree ya got there!” A burly looking man approached them. “Can I take that off your hands? It must be getting pretty heavy after carrying it all this way.” The man relieved them of the tree with a wink. “You kids coulda just taken the wagon back.” He pointed to a tractor hooked up to two trailers, one for people, one for trees. “Woulda been a lot easier!”

Andie shot Pacey an aggravated look. “Great Pacey. I have pine needles permanently embedded in my hands and this man is saying that we could have just had a tractor lug this thing back? I’m starting to think that you just won’t work out as my Paul Bunion”

“Sorry, ‘Babe’.” Pacey said handing the man his saw.

“Why don’t you two kids go get some hot chocolate? I’ll shake and wrap your tree for ya.” The man said already hefting the tree in the direction of the machine that shook all the dead needles off the tree then wrapped in up with netting.

Pacey and Andie headed off in the direction of the barn, which served refreshments. Pacey was unsure whether or not Andie was mad at him, so he hesitated whether or not to grab her hand. Andie solved his problem for him by grabbing his hand and giving him a quick smile. Before they reached the barn, she reached up and kissed his cheek.

“Thanks.” Andie whispered into his ear. “You’re welcome to chop down a tree for me anytime. But stay away from the redwoods. You might hurt yourself.”

Pacey laughed softly. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

They entered the barn. It was lavishly decorated with all sorts of holiday decorations. Christmas music blared from the speakers. Several kids waited in line to sit on Santa’s lap. Although, the Santa was pretty pathetic looking. After warming up with a mug of hot chocolate, Andie and Pacey sat just taking in the holiday festivities.

‘White Christmas’ sung by Bing Crosby suddenly came over the speakers. Pacey smiled. He stood up and extended his arm

“May I have this dance?” Pacey said, bowing slightly. Andie laughed. She just took his hand and let him spin her up into his arms. They got several looks from people, but they didn’t care. They were happy and that was all that mattered.

Pacey suddenly leaned in and kissed Andie. When he pulled away, Andie gave him a puzzled look. “Mistletoe.” Pacey smirked, pointing upwards. Andie glanced up and smiled.

“My turn.” She said, leaning in to kiss him again.
