He is five thousand years old... at least. He cannot remember past that. So little is known about him. He is clever and has a very strong will to live -- traits that have kept him alive through the centuries and millennia.
What happened during the period of his life that no one knows about? What was it that gave him the ability to survive through the ages? We may never know.
How did he find out about the watchers, when others never knew? For centuries, he went undetected as one of them, having easy access to all that the watchers knew -- information that allowed him to evade detection by other immortals and watchers alike.
He was only a legend, until Duncan MacLeod and Kalas discovered the truth. After that he became a friend to both Duncan and Joe Dawson.
