Chapter One

Elizabeth opened the door to the apartment she shared with her boyfriend Lucky Spencer. She tossed her jacket and sketchpad on the couch and plopped down beside it. She would have to go to work in a few short hours, too short a time.

She heard the mototrists passing on the streets of New York below. Besides the fact that she had to go to work at the art gallery and plaster a smile on her face while she tried to sell art to the snobs of the city in just a couple hours, she needed a subject to draw for art class. Liz needed an original idea. She needed to make an impression on her professeur.

Liz sighed, she just wanted to rest before going to work. She decided to make herself some soup for lunch then mellow out on the couch for the next couple hours.

She heard the door opening behind her. Liz turned to find Lucky entering the apartment.

"Lucky, what are you doing here?" she asked, "I thought you were supposed to record today."

Lucky had signed a contract with L and B records to record an album. He was supposed to go record his first single today at their New York branch.

"I was, but the guy who runs the thing is sick so they said we would reschedule," Lucky replied, giving her a quick kiss.

Lucky walked over to the closet to hang up his jacket. He came and sat on the couch beside Liz.

"What time do you work till tonight?" he asked her.

"I get off at seven," Liz repied, leaning her head on Lucky's shoulder, "Why?"

"I was sondering if you'd like to go out for supper with me tonight?"

"Sure Lucky, but what's the occasion?" Even though Lucky's singing career provided well for him, he still didn't spend money frugally. Dinner out for no reason was rare.

"It's a surprise," Lucky said mysteriously, standing up from the couch, "you'll find out tonight."

"All right," Liz told him, "I was just about to make some soup for lunch, you want some?"

"Sure," Lucky said, going into his bedroom, "Oh yeah, and Elizabeth? Dress fancy."

Liz put the soup in the pot, wondering what the surprise was. A formal dinner, it must be important.

***********************************************

Liz and Lucky were sitting at a table at Chez Pierre restaurant. Liz wondered what was going on. Lucky had been fidgeting since they arrived. They were finishing their main courses and Liz was perplexed at what Lucky was so worked up about.

The busboy came to clear their plated away. Lucky thanked him and went back to the silence which had already been in effect for most of the evening.

Liz began to get annoyed, "Okay Lucky, what's wrong?" she hissed, "You ahve barely said a word all evening. You invited me out adn said the reason was a "surprise" so what is it?"

"I'm sorry Elizabeth," Lucky told her, running his fingers through his hair in a nrevous gesture, "This is more nerve-wracking then I thought it would be."

"What is?"

"Listen Elizabeth, I want to tell you this the right way. Just give me a minute to decide how I should do it."

Liz waited patiently as Lucky sat there, thinking. She wondered what he had to tell her.

"Elizabeth," Lucky began, "you know you'll always be special to me right?"

Shit, Liz thought, he's breaking up with me. She din't know how she could take it. Lucky ahd been her strength and support for the past couple years. He was there for her throughout the trauma of her rape. She had fallen in love with him, and him wiht her. Lucky had got her to come to New York to pursue her art acreer. He had come with her and helped her overcome her fears of the city. She was grateful for all the things he had given her. Lucky had never expected more than she could give. Despite the fact they had lived in the same apartment together for the past year and a half he ahd never pressured her to do something she wasn't ready for. They had seperate bedrooms at the apartment. It was corny and cliched but she loved him more than life and din't know how she could live without him.

Lucky was continuing though,"I love you more than anything in the world. You're my whole existence."

Okay, so maybe he wasn't breaking up with her, "Lucky, I love you too. More than you know."

Her words seemed to encourage him and he pressed on, "Elizabeth, you're the best thing that ever happened to me. You enrich my life in so many ways. My life is nothing without you in it."

Lucky began to pull something out of his jacket pocket, "I know a few years ago we promised we would be together forever, now I'd like to finalize that."

Liz saw what he was holding, it was a small jewelry case. She watched in awe as Lucky dropped to one knee in front of her in the middle of the restaurant and opened up the case to reveal a ring.

"Elizabeth Webber, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"
