Liz glanced towards Lucky on the bed,"What is it? Is it Lucky?"
"No Liz, Lucky's fine,"Laura took a deep breath then said gently, "It's your grandmother. SHe is being brought in, she was in an accident on the way over here."
"Is she allright?" Liz asked.
"I don't know Liz. Bobbie just said teh paramedics called and she was being brought in by ambulance."
"Will they come tell me if she's okay or do I have to go find where she's being worked on?" Liz prayed Audrey was okay.
"Bobbie will come notify you when they know how she's going to be." Laura said, sympathetically.
Liz hoped that Audrey would be all right. It would be her fault if Gram died. She had gotten Gram to come here because SHE needed teh support. She couldn't imagine life without Gram. Even if Liz hadn't been living at home Gram was still a part of her life.
It seemed like an enternity before Bobbie entered the room. She had a grave expression on her face. "I must be your least favorite person right now Liz, first Lucky's bad news adn now this. It's bad Liz. Audrey's injuries were to bad for us to do much. Technically she's alive right now, but not really. SHe's on complete life support. Liz, your grandmother is brain dead."
Liz started to cry. Laura came over and hugged her, rocking her abck and forth.
Bobbie knelt in front of Liz,"There's a decision you must make. We are unable to contact your parents, so it's up to you as her closest relative. She will never wake up Liz, there's no chance of it. You have to understand that. You haev to decide whether to keep her on life support or let her die peacefully."
Liz stared at her, wht did she have to decide? She didn;t know if she could let ehr granmother go.
Bobbie continued, "There's more. Normally I'd say take as much time as you need, but there is another criteria in this I feel you should know. Your grandmother is a perfect match for Lucky. However, if you decide to take yoyur grandmother off life support, it shuld be done soon so we can do the transplant on Lucky."
Laura, still beside Liz, gasped. Liz herself didn't know what to do. Decide between teh two people closest to her. Technically she knew Audrey would not wake up, but it was still deciding life or death, no matter what type of life it would be.
"I don't know what to do!" Liz cried, tearing up again, "Can you assure me Bobbie that she will never wake up?"
"Yes Liz, I can. Her body still functions but the brain is dead. There is no chance of her waking up."
"Okay, let's give Lucky the transplant," Liz said, she couldn't stop her voice from breaking however. Laura held her as she cried.
Bobbie said,"You'll have to come with me Liz, there are papers you'll need to sign."
Liz nodded, wiping away the last of her tears,"Can I see her Bobbie?"
"Of course Elizabeth."
Liz followed her from the room.
********************************************
Liz opened the door to the room where Audrey was situated. She was going to try to say good-bye without breaking down. Her grandmother lay unmoving on the bed. She looked like Lucky, except there were more amchines around her, breathing for her etc.
Liz sat down in a chair by the bed, "Hey Gram, it's me Elizabeth. I came to say goodbye."
She took Audrey's hand which was cool to the touch, "I have decided to take you off life support. Please forgive me Gram, I'm not just trying to get rid of you, they asuured me you'll never wake up. You remmebered to check off that spot on your drivers license to be an organ donor, so you are going to save lives with your death, one of them Lucky's."
Liz continued, "The decision to take you off life support would never ahve been made of there was any chance of you surviving Gram. I want Lucky to live so badly but there is no way I would sacrifice any chance of gettign you back for that.
Liz took a moment to compose herself, "I have so much to thank you for Gram. You let me live with you, and put up with me even though I was a complete brat at first. You were more of a parent to my than my own parents. If it weren't for you I'd be hitchhiking around the country or something like that."
"You have been incredibly understanding the past while. I know you didn't want me to move in with Lucky, but you knew how important it was for me. What I am about to tell you would anger you if you were awake, but I feel you should know. You were going to be a great-granmother Gram. I know I am young for this, but I can handle it. With all luck on our side in this transplant Lucky will live and my baby will know it's father.
"Don't worry about me when you're gone, I will be able to handle myslef. I won't get into trouble just because you're not there to guide me."
Liz's show of bravado failed, "It won't be the same without you Gram. I will survive but it would ahve been so much easier with your help. When Lucky and I fight who will I turn to? You are my family here in PC and you're leaving me. Lucky's family is amazing, but they are not you. I wish you weren't leaving gram!"
"I have to go soon so they can make the transplant, but I want you to know how much I love you. I hope you look down from heaven on me wiht your blessing. Even if Lucky doesn't survive, I will."
Liz leaned over and kissed Audrey on the cheek. Wiping away tears she motioned to Bobbie who was waiting outside.
"You'd better leave Liz, this won't be easy to watch." Bobbie told her.
Liz was stubborn though,"I'm staying Bobbie."
Bobbie nodded and walked over to the bed, she unhooked all the machines. It was hard to wathc as Audrey's body took a last gasping breath and fell silent.
Bobbie put her arms around Liz. Liz hadn't even realized she was crying but she felt the wetness creep down her cheeks. All of a sudden it was too much, she was bawling. The sobs racked her body as Bobbie comforted her.
