Chapter 4

THey all stared at her incredulously.

"Liz," Laura began,"That's not a good idea. My God, you're 16, you can't be expected to spend all your time taking care of Lucky."

"Mrs.Spencer, this is not a sacrifice. Lucky needs someone to stay with him and I want to be that someone. I would be over there all the time anyway." Liz was determined she wanted to do this.

"What about your grandmother Liz," Bobbie interjected, "I don't think Audrey will be pleased with this arrangement."

"I don't mean to sound completely indiferent to her feelings, but it's not her choice to make. It's mine."

All of a sudden Liz thought of somehting she'd better check, "Lucky, you don't mind if I move in with you?"

"Elizabeth, I would love having you in my apartment with me. Are you sure this is what you want though? This is a lot to ask of one person." Lucky sounded concerned.

"Lucky, as I already explained, I want to do this!"

Luke spoke up for the first time since her announcement,"Okay Liz, I think it would be okay if you stayed with Lucky."

"Luke, why?" Laura asked turning around to look at him. Bobbie looked at him too.

"Honey, this is what will make Lucky happy. If there's a chance that he will d..... we should make his time what he wants it to be."

"I see your point,"Laura sighed,"Okay you too, but you have to promise to come see us often. And make sure nothing innappropriate happens."

Liz was actually surprised they had given in so easily.

She leaned over and kissed Lucky on the cheek, "Listen, I'll go grab some of my stuff and talk to Gram. By the time that is done, I'll meet you at your place.

She left the room, leaving Laura and Bobbie discussing Lucky's meds.

Back at HArdy's.

Liz ahd just told her Gram what she was planning to do. She had been shocked at how vehemently Audrey had denied her to go.

"Elizabeth, you will not move in with that boy! You are 16, not old enought to vote, let alone live alone with a boy."

Liz tried to be patient, but it was hard,"Gram, just to get one thing straight, I'm not asking your permission, I'm telling you what I'm doing. But I am trying to make you understand why I AM doing this. Lucky is dying, can't you get that. My moving in allows me to spend the rest of his life with him, and it allows him to live as he wants."

"Elizabeth, the last thing you need is to be around a dying boy, do you know how hard it will bw to watch him die and be powerless to make it stop."

"Gram, that doesn't matter to me. I love him with all my heart, and he feels the same. He helped me when I was raped. NOw it's my turn to help him, even if it's just to die happy. THis is not me moving in for the sole purpose of sleeping wihtnhim or anyhting."

Audrey seemed to be struggling inside. SHe sat down on the couch and put her hand on her forehead, as if she had a headache.

"Okay Liz, but you have to attend school regularly and check in wiht me often."

"THanks Gram," Liz told Audrey, hugging her.

"Well, you can't sleep on the floor over there. LEt's find the cot in hte basement."

*******************************************************

Audrey drove Liz over to Lucky's. Besides saving Liz the trip walking she wanted to assure Lucky this move was happening with her blessing.

They lugged the cot up the stairs and knocked on the door.

Bobbie answered the door,"Mrs.Hardy!"

She seemed shocked Audrey would actually give her permission for this move but quickly regained her composure,"Come on in, I had just finished explaining the medications to Lucky."

After they entered the room Bobbie left.

Lucky was lying down on the bed,"Hello Mrs.Hardy."

"Lucky, Liz told me about your condition. I'm so sorry." AUdrey said sympathetically.

"Thank you. And thanks for letting Liz move in. It means a lot to me." Lucky raised himself into a sitting position.

"She explained it all to me Lucky. We brought a cot for ehr to sleep on. Plus, if there's anyhting I can do, just let me know."

"Thnaks again Mrs.Hardy,"Lucky said as Audrey hugged Liz goodbye and left.

Liz walked over and sat beside him on the bed,"How you feeling?"

"A lot better. I'd like to say it's becasue you're here, but it's actually all these pain medications. If you need space for your stuff I cleaned out some of the closet."

"You didn't have to do that Lucky. I'll be fine with whatever room I have."

"Thanks so much for moving in with me. I love my parents but I cna't move back home."

Lucky took her hand, and it became too much for Liz to take. SHe burst into tears. Lucky held her as she cried. When it seemed she had not tears left, she sat up.

"I'm sorry Lucky,"she sniffled,"It's just that is all so fresh. I won't be a crybaby the whole time. I just need time to absorb the fact that.." she trailed off.

"It's okay Elizabeth, you can say it. I know there's a good chance I'll die. You can cry whenever you feel the need, as long as you don't mind when I start to cry too."

She hugged him tight, as if to reassure herself he was still there.

He whispered, "Thanks so much for coming to stay with me Elizabeth. You are my one and only love. If my last view before I die is of your face, I'll die with a smile on my face."
