Chapter Thirty

Liz stared at the empty house. It seemed eery to be back here, knowing Gram wouldn't be coming out to greet her. She had brought some of her stuff back from Lucky's so tehy could start moving in. Lucky was still in hte hospital, they would move his stuff when he was released.

She tossed her bags on hte chair and flopped on hte couch. This was soley her home now, hers and Lucky's, to do wiht as they chose.

Audrey's plants were still in bloom, Bobbie had been taking care of the house since Gram died

Liz didn't feel like crying anymore, she had come to terms with Grams death. Not the pain had entirely faded, she was just at peace. She would never forget Gram, how could she?

She sighed, they would have to move things around a little. SHe wasn't sure she could stay here if everyhting was exactly as it had been with Gram alive. Plus, they were moving Lucky's furniture in. How would they fit that into the decorating scheme

Thinking of Lucky caused her to sigh again. How could he have been so stupid as to get a job with organized crime? She wasn't really mad, exactly, just upset he would do something so ignorant. Sure the money he would earn was good, but she would rather have her Lucky.

The phone beside her rang. She picked it up, "Hello?"

"Hey Liz," the voice said, "It's Luke. We're going to bring Lucky home, they've decided to release him. SHould he go to teh apartment or to your grand.....your new house."

"Bring him to the house," Liz said,"Is he okay?"

Luke laughed, "Yeah, he's fine. Bobbie's giving him an earful about bedrest."

"Good," Liz replied, "Hopefully he'll listen to someone. Lucky can be so damn stubborn."

"Yeah, wonder where he gets it from?" Luke asked innocently.

Liz laughed and thanked Luke for calling. She'd go fix up the bed in the master bedroom for Lucky. It would be the most comfortable place for him.

Liz stood up from the couch. Looking around the living room that was bigger than their whole apartment she whispered, "Thnak you Gram."

As Liz fixed the sheets on the bed she heard teh doorbell ring. SHe ran down the stairs two at a time to get it.

Luke stood and the doorstep, holding a protesting Lucky in his arms, "Really dad, I can walk you know."

Liz laughed at the spectacle, "You must really work out Luke."

"Nah," he said, carrying Lucky inside, "This guy here's just so puny, he's nothing to lift."

He set Lucky down on the couch. Lucky looked incredibly embarassed. "He wouldn't even let me walk out of the hospital with some dignity."

"Good," Elizabeth said.

"You're both against me," Lucky mumbled.

"NO Cowboy," Luke replied seriously, "We just care to damn much about your worthless life."

"Thanks dad, so nice to know I'm appreciated around here." Lucky said, but he realized how much his father cared.

"Well," Liz said, plopping down beside him on the couch,"You're greatly appreciated by me." she managed to make it sound sexy.

"Save it till I'm gone," Luke said walking out the door.

As soon as the door shut behind him Lucky said, "Now how greatly am I appreciated?"

He leaned over and kissed her, pressing her down into the cushions. Liz moaned as he let his hands roam, but forced herslef to push him away.

"None of that. Bedrest, remember?"

Lucky grinned, "Bobbie never said someone couldn't rest with me."

"Funny, but none of that till you're all better." Liz stated, she laughed as Lucky groaned, "Now, I'd carry you upstairs to the bed, but I'm not as strong as your father. I'll be up in a minute."

As he walked up the stairs Liz grabbed the bags that contained some of Lucky's stuff, lugging them behind her.

When she entered the master bedroom, Lucky was already in bed. She was surprised that he had actually listened.

Lucky motioned for her to join him. "Allright," she said warily, "But nothing fishy understand? Otherwise you'll be sleeping alone tonight."

He held up his hands innocently, "You have my word."

Liz tossed off her shoes and cuddled up in the big bed with Lucky. She rested her head on Lucky's chest. Liz had to tell him how she felt.

"Lucky?"

"Yeah Liz," he said, sounding almost on the verge of sleep.

"I don't want to be an overprotective girlfriend, fiance or wife, but I won't let you do somehting like that again. If you ever scare me like that again I'll kill you."

Lucky understood what she was talking about, "I won't Liz. This time taught me somehting. I risked everyhting I have, and I won't do it again. No matter how desperate we get for cash I will never take that job."

He lifted her face to his and repeated the 4 simple words he had said earlier. "You have my word."

Liz smiled up at him, and kissed him softly on the lips. SHe borrowed into his chest and presently fell asleep.

Lucky sat there though, wide awake. He prayed he could keep that promise to her. Moreno knew his name now. If that bastard so much as looked at Liz or his child he'd kill him with his abre hands.

As soon as he was sure Liz was asleep, he slid down on the bed. He wanted to have another converstaion with their child.

He ran his hands over Liz's stomach, which was getting round, "Hey baby. Long time no see. How've you been doing since our last conversation?"

"You better stay healthy. This is your father ordering you to do so. Our family can't take any more worry. You better be born healthy when you're due in 3 months."

"I want to make a promise to you. I will protect you till hte day I die. In this case, it will mean giving up a good paying job, but you and your mom are worth it. I know I risked yuor future working for Jason, but it stops here."

"You have to be healthy, for you mother. She needs somehitng to go right for her adn unfortunately I haven't been helping in that department. I've heeped worries upon her she doesn't deserve. I don't want her to break, she's a tough lady, but there's only so much a person can stand. Please do this for me baby, be healthy. You'll be the best thing in our lives, adn we'll love you no matter what, but try to make life a little easier."

Liz smiled as she felt Lucky kiss ehr stomach. He was the sweetest man. Her child was going to be so lucky to have a great fahter like him.

"What else have you told our child?" she murmered.

Lucky sat up as if he'd been shot, "You heard that?"

SHe nodded adn sat up too, "Uh huh, every word. How long have you been talking to the baby?"

Lucky blushed bright red, "Well, this was the second time I've done it. If it makes you uncomfortable......"

Liz laughed, "Uncomfortable? That's the sweetest thing you've done. Even besides everyhitng else, te child will be conforted by your voice when he enters this world."

He smiled, "You're okay with me doing this?"

Liz nodded, "Of course." she pulled his lips towards hers for a kiss adn whispered, just to clarify, "Lucky, wahtever happens, I won't break. We will survive."

********************************************************

THe next morning Liz awoke before sunrise. Guiltily she glance over at Lucky to make sure he was still asleep. His talking to the baby was a good idea, but she didn't want him to hear her doing it.

"Hey little baby," she murmered to the life growing inside her, "This is your mom talking. I know your dad's been giving you advice but it's my turn now."

"You know how he told you not to cause me worry? Well, forget that. Your my child and I'll worry no matter waht. I love you with all my heart no matter how you turn out. You're the best of me and your dad."

"Right now, I just have one pice of advice to you. Always follow your heart. It will take you great places," Liz glanced lovingly over at a sleeping Lucky. she rubbed her stomach and snugled back in beside him and fell back asleep.
