Lucky rushed into the hospital with Liz. Luke had driven the over. {Lucky and Liz can't afford a car of their own}. Liz contractions were not very close together, but the baby was on the way.
Bobbie rushed up to them when they entered. "What's going on."
Liz looked at her as if she'd grown an extra head, "What does it look like? I'm having my baby."
"She's 2 1/2 months early!" Lucky exclaimes.
"I'm well aware of that Lucky," Bobbie assured him taking Liz's arm. She motioned for an intern to bring over a wheelchair. SHe sat Liz down in it.
Luke stood off to the side. "I'll be back, I have to go pick up Laura and Lulu."
Bobbie nodded, but her attention was focused on Liz who was having another contraction. "That's it honey. Now you stay here with Lucky while I go see which delivery rooms are open."
Lucky knelt in front of the wheelchair. Liz's contraction had subsided and she was breathing heavily.
"You're doidn great honey," he said, wiht more confidence than he felt, "Just keep breathing."
Liz moaned, "This is worse than I could have imagined."
Lucky replied, "We can get you a shot or somehting, do yuo want a shot?"
Liz shook her head adamantly, "No, this is going to be a natural childbirth."
Another contraption racked her body. Lucky coached her through, "Breathe in out, hooo hoo."
Liz followed his lead, the contraption was a short one.
Bobbie was back right away. "Follow me. Lucky push her. Room #4 is open."
Lucky followed Bobbie down the hall, pushing Elizabeth in her wheelchair. He wanted to tell Bobbie to hurry. The baby was coming. They paused outside the door, Bobbie paused to talk to a young doctor.
She talked softly, but Lucky overheard what she sadi, "Make sure to get an incubator ready. This baby is extremely premature."
A nurse took the handles of Liz's whell chair from Lucky to push her into the room. Bobbie was about to follow them in, but Lucky grabbed her arm.
He took a couple deep breaths and tried to calm himself, "Bobbie, is the baby going to be allright? I need to know!"
Bobbie sighed, "Lucky, I can't give you any gaurantees. There is a 50/50 chance of you child surviving. We'll do all we can to save the baby, you know that Lucky."
Lucky felt a lump rise in his chest. His child couldn't die! This was not happening, not to them. Bobbie gave his shoulder a squeeze adn went into the delivery room. Lucky followed her.
Liz was set on the table thing. Lucky rushed to her side. "You hanging in there Liz?"
Liz nearly screamed at him, "How does it look like I'm doing? This hurts like hell Lucky."
"I know Liz, but just keep breathing, in and out, in and out," he made breathing noises.
She galred at him, "I'll tell you what you can shove your in adn out crap, up your..."
Bobbie interrupted, "I know it hurts Liz, but try not to bite my nephews head off. Now, when your next contraption comes, I want you to push as hard as you can."
As the pain racked her body again she pushed with all her might. Lucky leaned in beside her nad chanted, "Puch Liz, come on, you can do it." One glare form her shut him up quick.
"I've got a head," Bobbie announced triumphantly, adn then, "Oh shit."
"What is it Bobbie?" Lucky asked, worried.
"The ambilical cord is around the babies neck," she muttered, thankfully, Liz was panting and didn't catch what she said.
Bobbie said loudly, "Push as hard as you can Liz, we have to get this baby out ASAP."
Liz gritted her teeth and pushed. Lucky's hadn which she held felt as if it was being crushed.
"We've got a baby girl," Bobbie said triumphantly, she quickly snapped the cord around the teeny baby's neck. She noticed immediately the baby wasn't breathing. SHe handed the baby off to the attending who began the CPR procedure while another attending intubated the baby.
Liz was all sweaty, she hadn't heard teh previous conversations, and was wondering what was going on, "What are tehy doing with my baby?"
"Shhh Liz," Lucky said trying to calm her, "They're trying to save her."
"Save her, waht do you mean? Why isn't my baby crying? Babies are supposed to cry." Liz asked hysterically.
"THe cord was wrapped around the baby's neck," Lucky said, tears streaming down his face, "she wasn't breahting when she was born. Plus, she's 2 1/2 months premature."
Liz burst into tears too, "She can't die Lucky, she's my baby. I won't let her die, she hasn't even lived. I should have taken things easier and this never would have happened, it's all my fault!"
Lucky took her into his arms as she sobbed, Lucky felt like his heart was breaking. Not only for their baby who was fighitng for her life, but for Liz's pain he couldn't absolve.
"Liz honey, it's not your fault." he said emphatically, "She was just a little to anxious to enter the world, you did nothing wrong."
Liz shook her head, the tears still streaming, "Yes Lucky, I was the one who worked too hars, maybe starting to mow the lawn today was the last straw."
"Liz look at me," Lucky said, raising her head to look into his eyes,"You. Are. Not. To Blame. Besides, she's going to be okay, don't give up hope. The doctors here are great, you know that. Are baby is going to survive, everyhitng will be all right.
Liz held the love of his life as they watched adn prayed for their baby fighting for her life.
