Liz sat in their apartment, clutching a pillow to her chest for comfort. Lucky had been so understanding when she had let herslef go after her parents had stormed out of Lucky's hospital room. He just didn't realize how she felt.
It hurt so much. What happened to that 'unconditional love' parents were supposed to have for their children? Teenage pregnancy might not thrill her parents but did they have to desert her entirely?
They had the nerve to compare her to the 'princess'. Sarah was no better than her in any way. Sarah may not be sleeping with anyone at the moment, but hse was throwing herself at any guy around, especially Nikolas.
Lucky was so fortunate to have such loving parents. No matter waht their family went throught they were always there for him. Through thick and thin. She wished she could have that kind of family life. Instead she had a jealous, but parents favorite, sister. Rigid parents who were willing to walk out on their pregnant daughter. The only family member close to her at all was dead.
She fervently hoped Caroline and Jeff would come around. Who was going to teach her about baby care? Who was she going to call excitedly when her baby said its first word? Laura and Luke would probably smother the child in grandparental attention, but what was she going to tell her child when they asked why their other grandparents never visited?
She thought of the life that grew inside her and rubbed her stomach."It'll be okay." she whispered to the child she knew couldn't hear her.
She cried quietly. For herself, for her yet unborn child, for the kind of family life they would never know.
A knock sounded on the door.
"Who is it?" Liz called out, trying to hide the fact she had been crying.
"It's Laura," she said from behind the closed door.
"Come in," Liz said quickly. She quickly wiped her tears away hoping Laura wouldn't notice she had cried.
Laura walked in the door carrying a casserole dish. As soon as she saw Elizabeths red, puffy eyes she set down the dish on the table.
"Lucky told me Liz, about the confrontation with your parents. I didn't get all the details but i take it that it didn't go too well," Laura said sympathetically.
"No, unless you consider disowning your daughter 'going well'." Liz said, trying to make light of it but it was too hard.
"I'm so sorry Liz," Laura said, "I had no idea it was that bad."
Liz nodded, "They are leaving after the funeral and never looking back."
"Thats horrible," Laura said idignantly,"You're their youngest daughter."
"This pregnancy was the last straw for them. I was always second best to Sarah, the disappointment of the family. This just gives them a valid excuse," Liz tried to explain through a haze of tears.
"Liz, listen to me," Laura said firmly, putting a reassuring arm on her shoulder,"there is no valid excuse for abandoning a daughter. Yes, you and Lucky did make a mistake. Even Luke and I can't be thrilled, but we love you both anyway. Lucky is our son and we'll stick by him through thick and thin. You are our the center of our sons universe adn we love you like a daughter, we'll stick by you too."
"I'm glad we have your support, but what about my parents? My mother won't be here when I have my first child. My child won't know its grandparents, it will have you guys, but the child deserves much more than that. It shouldn't have to pay for its mothers mistakes." Liz said crying for waht seemed like the hundreth time that day, "I won't say my family relationship was perfect before, but htis is killing me Mrs.Spencer."
"I understand Liz," Laura hugged her. "You child won't be paying for your mistakes. This is your parents choice, not yours, you are depriving your baby of nothing. The baby will have all the love it needs. Regardless of Carooline and Jeff leaving, we will be there. Even if its just for babysitting we will try our best to fill any grandparental void that child may have. I know I'm not your biological mother Liz, but I can be a surrogate mother. I can listen to you complain about my son when he's being a jerk, adn trust me he will, it runs in the family. I can take you baby shopping. I can babysit ofr my grandchild. You can call me anytime, for any reason. I know I won't be able to be your real mother, but I'll help you all I can."
"Thank you so much Mrs.Spencer," Liz said,"That means more to me than you know. My parents will probably never come around, I can accept that. I'm so glad that not only did I fall in love with a wonderul guy, but I fell in love with a guy who has wonderful parents."
"Thanks Liz, adn for Gods sake, call me Laura," she said smiling, although she was getting teary too, "Now come eat. I know you probably didn't feel like cooking so I brought over some food."
"Thanks Mrs...Laura," Liz said feeling truly happy for the first time that day.
"Let's eat, then we can discuss my sons homecoming tomorrow. We can spoil the poor boy crazy." Laura told her.
Liz sat at the table, smiling happily. As they discussed how big a cake they should get Liz thought how fortunate she was to have found her way to the Spencer family.
