Chapter Nineteen

"Julius" stared through the binoculars at the cabin in the woods. The light was on in one of the rooms. They had determined it to be the young Mr.Spencers. No doubt Miss Webber was in there with him. After watching their shameful display on the living room couch before the drapes were shut left little doubt in his mind waht they were up to right now.

Helena walked up behind him and placed a hand on his shoulder, "Are you ready?"

He turned around, "Yes. I have a feeling they'll stay occupied for awhile."

THe snow flurries ahd died down. The night had an eerie clam to it. The fresh-fallen snow glistened in the moonlight.

He shook his head, "I wish we didn't have to go this far."

Helena's voice hardened, "You know there is no other choice but to dispose of them."

He sighed, "I know, Luke must not know that his son is alive. With Lucky's escape the plan was foiled, but we can still benefit wiht other transactions with Mr.Spencer if he doesn't realize I've held his son captive all these years. Lucky signed his brother and girlfriends death warrants though, when he notified them he was still alive. They will tell if they had a chance."

Helena nodded, "And that's why they must die. At your word my men are ready."

Julius was about to give the order when he heard a noise coming from the driveway leading up to the house. He checked to make sure they were all hidden in the trees. It was a car.

THe car parked in front of the house. A man got out and walked to the house adn went inside.

He turned to Helena, "We just about missed one didn't we?"

Lucky froze from kissing Elizabeth as he heard a noise down below. WHo was in the house? He felt ELizbaeth tense against him.

THye both relaxed as they heard Nikolas's voice, "It's me! The storm died down and I thought I'd get back."

Liz looked at Lucky with panicked eyes, "We can't let him know I'm in here with you!" she whispered urgently.

Lcky nodded. He heard Nikolas climbing the stairs, "You guys awake?"

Lucky called out, "I am. Liz is asleep though."

"HOw was your evening?" Nik said as he walked by Lucky's door.

"It was fine," Lucky said nonchalantly which earned him a punch from Elizbaeth. He winced and glared down at her.

"YOu OK?" Nik asked, "You sound different."

"Just fine," Lucky called back, "Night Nikky!"

"Good night," Nik called back. Lucky heard his feet on the hall floors and the bedroom door close behind him.

"THat was close," Liz whispered, "I'm not ashamed to let the world now, it's just...Nik, you know."

"I understand," Lucky nodded, then grinned, "NOw where were we?"

Liz pulled his head down to hers, "Right here I think." she kissed him passionately on the mouth.

Something in your eyes
Makes me want to lose myself
Makes me want to lose myself
In your arms

There's something in your voice
Makes my heart beat fast
Hope this feeling lasts
The rest of my life

If you knew how lonely
My life has been
And how low I fell
For so long

If you knew how I wanted
Someone to come along
And change my life
The way you've done

Feels like home to me
Feels like home to me
Feels like I am all the way back
Where I come from

Feels like home to me
Feels like home to me
Feels like I am all the way back
Where I belong

A window breaks
Down a long dark street
And a siren wails
In the night

But I'm alright
Cause I have you here with me
And I can almost see
Through the dark there's a light

If you knew how much
This moment means to me
And how long I've waited
For your touch

If you knew how happy
You are making me
I've never thought I'd love anyone
So much

Feels like home to me
Feels like home to me
Feels like I am all the way back
Where I come from

Feels like home to me
Feels like home to me
Feels like I am all the way back
Where I belong
Feels like I am all the way back
Where I Belong

He stared emotionlessly at the house, "Do it now."

Helena nodded and went to give the orders to her henchmen.

**********************************************************

Liz rested her head on Lucky's chest as he stroked her hair. "You are amazing Mr.Spencer."

He laughed softly, "I could get used to hearing that. I know I am so amazing."

She re-adjusted her head to get more comfortbale, "Big ego too. NOw, you were supposed to reply that I was amazing too."

Liz said it jokingly, but she wanted to now is hse didn't really disappoint him tonight.

Her heart sank as lucky replied, "Liz darling, you were not amazing. He went on to say though, "You are damn spectacular."

Liz smiled, "Glad you realize it Lucky."

"NOw who has a big ego?" Lucky teased, tickling her sides.

Liz laughed and tried to fight off his hands, "NO! Lucky, stop!"

His ahds left her sides and she was surprised, he never gave up on a tickle-war that easy before.

"What is it?" she asked hoisting herself up on her elbows.

"DO you smell somehting?" he asked suddenly.

Liz sniffed the air, "My God, it's smoke!"

Lucky raced to the door in his currenty bare state and flung it open. Flames covered the hallway, barring escape. He slammed hte door shut as he re-entered the room.

"What are we going to do Lucky?" Liz asked, trying not to panic. She would stay calm, she ahd to.

Lucky tossed her some of his clothes, "Put these on, we need to hurry."

"What are we going to do?" Liz asked pulling on Lucky's shirt.

Lucky grimaced, "Tie bed sheet together and go out the window."

*********************************************************

Liz slid to the ground after Lucky.

"Let's never do that again," Liz said shakily, "I was sure I was going to fall."

"But you didn't," Lucky said.

THey walked around the cabin to the front. The fire raged through the house. Flames escaped every window. It had spread fast and quick.

"THis was no freak accident," Lucky frowned.

Liz suddenly looked around panicked, "Nikolas! He's still in there."

"My GOd!" Lucky breathed as they watched part of the roof collapse.

Lucky shoved Liz back, "wait here. I'm going to get him. He may be unconsious in there."

"Lucky," Liz grasped his arm desperately, "Be careful, please."

He smiled breifly and pulled from her grasp. Liz watched helplessly as Lucky sprinted towards the burning house adn inside.

********************************************************

The heat was intense. Lucky felt as if his skin was peeling off. Beads of sweat poured over his forehead as he walked blindly through the cabin. He held his jacket over his head, trying to shield himself from the sparks.

Lucky narrowly dodged a falling board. He felt the couch with his hand. Only a couple more fet to the stairs. He ahd to maek it, he had to save Nikolas.

********************************************************

Liz watched in agony as the fire raged through the cabin. The same biulding the love of her life was in. She was shocked to see someone running from behind the house, but not Lucky.

"Nikolas!" she cried out, running to him.

Nikolas limped towards her. He held his arm which was slanted at an irregular angle.

"I think it's broken," he gasped, collapsing to the ground.

Liz kenlt over him, "What ahppened?"

Nik coughed viciously, "I smelled smoke. THe hallway was filled wiht fire so I decided to go out the window. Unfortuantely, my makeshift rope didn't quite reach the ground."

Liz pulled back, "YOu escaped on your own?"

Nik nodded, coughing as if he would die any second.

Liz jumped to her feet, "YOu didn't see Lucky?"

Nik shook his head, "NO, isn't he with you?"

"Oh my God Nik, no. He was, but went back in the house to try and save you!"

Nik grimaced from the pain, "I'll have to go in after him."

"Don't be ridiculous," Liz snapped, already turning to go, "Your half dead, I'm going in after him."

Nik protested, "He amy be okay Liz, you don't need to risk your life as well."

Liz shook her head, "he also may be trapped under part of the roof or something. Wait here Nik."

With that she was off.

********************************************************

Lucky dashed up the stairs, trhough the flames. He prayed Nikolas was allright. Nik couldn't die, and neither would Lucky.

Lucky threw opent eh door to Nikolas's room, expecting to fin him in there. At the very worst unconsious on the floor. ut waht eh found was nearly as bad, an empty room.

Lucky's lungs filled wiht the choking smoke, and he coughed. Dry, hacking sounds that filled his chest with pain.

**********************************************************

Liz raced into the cabin, praying Lucky was allright. She would nolt lose him, not now, not ever. She couldn't go on without him, of this she was sure.

--Flashback--
Liz: Lucky, Lucky! Lucky! Where’s Lucky?!!! Where is he?

Taggert: (restraining her) We’re gonna find him…we’re gonna find him.

Liz: We’ve gotta get him out! Let me go!! What happened? Tell me he’s alright! TELL ME HE’S ALRIGHT!!
-------------

Liz cringed as the fire almost seemed to grasp at her. Where was Lucky? Why couldn't she find him?

"Lucky?" she cried out desperately, galncing around, trying to find him.

--Flashback--
Taggert: Everything’s gonna be ok, everything’s gonna be ok. (they wheel a body on a stretcher past Liz and Taggert into an ambulance)

Liz: It’s not Lucky. It’s not Lucky! Let me see him! Let me show you!

Taggert: No, no, no. Listen to me! You don’t want to see him like this. (Liz is just in total shock as Taggert hugs her) I know, I know.

Taggert: (he brings Liz something to drink) Water? Here. (he puts his coat around her) How’d you know to come? Who called you?

Liz: It’s not Lucky. I know it. That body…it’s somebody else.

Taggert: Do you have any idea where your grandmother is?

Liz: You’re not hearing me!!! I would know, alright? Whoever that is, it’s not Lucky.

Taggert: We’ll do tests.

Liz: I don’t need any tests. Lucky’s reflexes are too quick.

Taggert: The fire spread fast.

Liz: So, he got out. If he was even in there.

Taggert: Elizabeth listen. The person was found in Lucky’s room. There was a witness who was parked in his car who said he saw Lucky enter the building just before the fire broke out.

Liz: That doesn’t mean that…I know it’s not Lucky. It’s not Lucky! I need to see. (she gets up and Taggert holds her back again)

Taggert: Elizabeth, listen to me. Listen to me, ok? That’s not an image you want to carry around in your head. Do you understand what I’m saying?

(Bobbie arrives, finds out and starts crying and screaming, she then sees Elizabeth and goes over and hugs her)
--------

Liz kept remembering hte horror of that night. Finding out that the love of her life was dead. Nothing could compare to the pain she had felt back then.

She was nearly oblivious to the heat as she stumbled on hte couch in the living room. The couch where she had been with Lucky only hours before.

--Flashback--
Liz: I know what they’re thinking, but it’s not true. Lucky’s fine. He’s not hurt. I can feel it. Lucky and I, we’re connected. If something terrible happened, I would know. We’re meeting for breakfast tomorrow morning. He’s probably just out finding something special. He introduced me to New York pretzels, you know? Hey, did you know that we’re moving to New York? Did he tell you?

(Sonny arrives, then Luke. Luke blames Sonny. Luke then hugs Bobbie and tells her to take care of Elizabeth. Then Jason arrives too)

Liz: (to Sonny and Jason) Tell them! Tell them it’s not Lucky! Someone broke into his room, or you sent him away on a job or something, didn’t you? Where’s Lucky???!! You have to know!!!

Taggert: Elizabeth? Forensics has found something. Are you up to taking a look?

Liz: Yeah. It’s Lucky’s subway token. He must have dropped it on his way out. Where did you find it? It was downstairs right? You found it downstairs didn’t you?

Taggert: We found it on the body.

Liz: Oh, no. Oh, god, please no. (She breaks down as Sonny holds her)
-------

Liz stumbled through the smoke. She glanced around, trying to find Lucky in the cloudy atmosphere. Where was he? Lucky couldn't die, he wouldn't. She could save him this time, adn she would.

Liz dashed up the stairs, being careful not to trip. What she saw made her heart stop. Lucky was lying unconsious on the floor.

Walk through the fire
Walk through the fire (walk through the fire)
Through the dust and ashes
While the building crashes
Walk through the flame (walk through the fire)
No trace of indecision
Lion keep his vision clear

Moving out
Across the water
The wet leaves quiver in the heat
Darkness heavy on my shoulder
Smell the smoke, sickly sweet
The body's weak, the shadow's strong

Walk through the fire (walk through the fire)
Through the dust and ashes
While the building crashes
Walk through the flame (walk through the fire)
Lion show no sign of fear

Walk through the fire (walk through the fire)
Through the dust and ashes
While the building crashes
Walk through the flame (walk through the fire)
No time for doubt or caution
Taken by the strong emotion
Walk through the fire (walk through the fire)
No trace of indecision
Lion hold his vision clear

(Walk, walk, walk)

Walk through the fire (walk through the fire)
Walking in the path of angel
Walk on down below, walk on down below
Walk on down below, walk on down below

Liz leaned over him and checked his pulse. It was still there, but faint. He was alive, there was still hope.

Liz struggled under hsi weight as she lifted him up balancing him over her shoulders. She was barely able to move, but she persisted.

Liz stumbled down the stairs, but kept Lucky aloft. She nearly screamed as a burning board fell at her feet. She walked around it and kept going.

It seemed hours before they reached the cool night air. It was a magic balm on her skin. She let Lucky slide from her to the ground and leaned over him panting.

Nik hurried up to them, "Is he alright?"

Liz answered, between hacking coughs, "I don't know."

Nik leaned voer and felt for a pulse, "He has a weak pulse, but he's breathing."

Liz leaned over Lucky, 'Please wake up Lucky, Please. You have to be allright, you have to."

Nik's heart broke as he watched the touching scene. Lucky had to be okay, not only to make Nik happy, but for Liz. Nik tried to ignore the fact Liz was dressed in Lucky's clothes, but he knew waht it meant. Liz would never survive if Lucky didn't.
