Chapter Seventeen

Elizabeth heard the door slam shut behind Nikolas as he exited the cabin. She looked across the hall at Lucky who still had his head poked out the door.

"We have the whole house to ourselves...." she trailed off.

Lucky looked at her intently, hoping she wasn't insinuating anything. He didn't want to hurt her anymore, "We need to talk Liz."

She nodded, not realizind the grave tone of his voice, "Yeah, we do. You want to come in here?"

Lucky shook his head, "No." of course he wanted to talk to her in there. But it wan't a good idea, not in the least. He would never force anything on Liz, but he just wanted a more neutral setting then a bedroom.

Liz was taken aback. "Okay, just let me get a sweater and I'll meet you downstairs."

Lucky watched ehr bedroom door close behind her. He raked his fingers through his hair. How could he tell her they shouldn't be together. How could he explain to her that al he would do would be to cause her undue pain. How could he get her to understand.

Lucky walked down the stairs to the main floor of the cabin. He wished he had asked to borrow a sweater from Nik. It was freezing in the cabin. It was the beginning of winter.

He could see soft snowflakes falling gently from the sky. Lucky shivered as a chill passed through him. The winter sky was so calm. The trees around the cabin glistened with the snow covering their tops.

Lucky started when he felt a pair of warm arms encircle him from behind.

"Beautiful, isn't it?" Liz whispered in his ear.

"Yeah, it is." Lucky agreed smiling sadly. He removed her arms from around his kneck.

Liz wondered waht was eating at him. He was so despondent. She had invisioned kissing him passionately after they were alone, with the cabin to themselves, but she didn't think Lucky wantd that right now.

She sat down beside him on the couch. "Okay Lucky, waht's up?"

Lucky sighed and looked at sadly, "We can't be together Liz."

Liz just stared at him incredulously, "What are you talkg about? 'We can't be togehter'?"

Lucky sighed, "Maybe that was a bit to abrupt. It just can't happen though Liz. You have to understand, all I want is waht is best for you."

"I know that Lucky," Liz told him, "but what is best for me is you."

"No Liz," Lucky shook his head, "I'm not the best thing for you. I cause you more pain that happiness. I even made you miscarry..."

Liz cut him off, "Lucky you know you aren't responsible. I explained that to you. And don't think you cause me more pain than happiness. Every minute I spend wiht you makes up for a year of misery. And trust me, I'm only in pain when I'm not with you."

Lucky sighed, "Please don't make this harder than it has to be Liz. I have nothing to offer you, nothing. I'm a good for nothing, no job etc, who has been in captivity for four years. I will only wreck the life you've created for yourself after I ahd gone."

Liz sighed, she knew she ahd to tell him. She dreaded the way he would look at her, but he needed to know.

"lucky," she began simply,"You have to understand that none of those things are true, not one. You do have something to offer me. Your love is all I need."

WHen he began to try to speak, she covered his mouth with her hadn, "YOu have to listen to me Lucky. THis isn't going to be easy to say, but you have to know."

"Nikolas knows. I didn't tell him, but he found out on his own. Lucky, that day Nik brought me to you, I had been contemplating taking my own life. When Nik was bringing me home from the hospital, I swiped some strong medications from the tray in the hospital and was planning on taking them when I got home."

"Life was so empty. Let me rephrase that, there was no life worth living anymore. I ahd been raped for a second time, and this time had been impregnanted with a child. That baby had died, something I had deep down wanted to happen. Most of all though, you were gone. You were my support, my life, my all. The 4 years hadn't diminished the pain or the loneliness. Seeing oyu alive again saved me. All thought of dying flew from my mind. I just wanted to live again, with you."

Liz looked down at her hands, "I'm not trying to guilt you into anyhting Lucky. If you don't love me anymore, I won't pressure you into standing by me. But I just wanted you to know how much you mean to me. AS my lover, or as my friend. NO matter waht though, I will always love you."

Liz didn't realize she was crying until Lucky wiped the tears from her face with his fingers. She sniffled and he smiled sadly, stroking ehr face.

Winter snow is falling down
Children laughing all around
Lights are turning on
like a fairy tale come true

Sitting by the fire we made
You're the answer when i prayed
I would find someone
and baby i found you

All i want is to hold you forever
All i need is you more every day
You saved my heart
from being broken apart
You gave your love away
and i'm thankful every day
for the gift

Watching as you softly sleep
What i'd give if i could keep
Just this moment
if only time stood still

But the colors fade away
And the years will make us grey
But baby in my eyes
You'll still be beautiful

All i want is to hold you forever
All i need is you more every day
You saved my heart
from being broken apart
You gave your love away
And i'm thankful every day
for the gift

(instrumental)

All i want is to hold you forever
All i need is you more every day
You saved my heart
from being broken apart
You gave your love away
I can't find the words to say
That i'm thankful every day
for the gift

Lucky leaned down and kissed her lightly on the forhead, "Don't ever think I don't love you Liz, I will love you till my dying breath. I just don't want you to be hurt. I can't believe you considered killing yourself. You have so much to live for, with or without me."

Liz shook her head emphatically. "No Lucky, you are waht I haev to live for. I can't help it, you mean so much to me."

Lucky sighed, "It's your choice Liz, but be sure you want me to stay in your life. I may be more trouble than I'm worht."

"Trust me Lucky," Liz smile through ehr tears, "You are worth any amount of trouble."

SHe tilted her head up and kissed him gently on the mouth. He returned the kiss passionately, kissing ehr as he ahd wanted to do for these past few years. His lips brushed hers again and again, until she pressed hers to his hungrily as if she wanted to devour him.

Liz raked her fingers through his soft hair, reveling in its silkiness. She never wanted this moment to end, never.....

THe ringing of the phone interrupted their interlude on the couch. Lucky sat up, his hair all mussed, "I better answer that. It's probably Nikolas."

Liz nodded breathlessly as he stood up and walked over to the phonestand.

"Hello," Lucky said into the phone.

"HEy Lucky?" It was Nikoals although the connection was poor, "It's Nikolas."

"HEy Nik, did you get ahold of my parents?" Lucky asked, cradling the phone under his chin.

"No, but I talked to Bobbie who had talked to them. THey are returning to Port Charled tomorrow sometime. I told her Liz and I would be back the day after that to say hello."

"No, the snow's coming down too hard now. I'm going to stick it out at the hotle here in town. I don't want to rsik driving back. There's some food in the refrigerator and such if you guys want supper."

"Ok Nik," Lucky replied, "See you in the morning."

He hung up the phone and turned to Liz, "Nik got ahold of my aprents. They are flying in tomorrow. He won't be back though, the storms getting too bad."

She stood up, "That's too bad, so we have the whole place to ourselves?"

He nodded, trying not to smile at waht he was sure she ahd in mind, "Nik said there's soem food in the refrigerator, you hungry?"

She nodded reluctantly and followed him inot the kitchen.

The fridge was stocked with all kinds of food imaginable. "I wonder who he payed to do all this," Lucky remarked.

Liz shrugged and grabbed a can of pop from the fridge, "Who cares?"

Lucky grabbed some food, "I'll cook if you don't mind. There's no need to let this good food go to waste."

"Funny Spencer," Liz said dryly, "I'll have you know I'm now a master chef."

Lucky rasied his eyebrows, "YOu? MAster chef? In the same sentence?'

Liz laughed, "Well, I can do macoroni and zap leftovers in the mocrowave."

"It's more than you could do 4 years ago," Lucky reminded her, turning on the burner on the stove.

WHen they were done hte delicious meal Lucky had prepared, they went back into the living room.

Liz had to go to the washroom and when she came back seh founf Lucky over by the record player in the corner of the room.

"My parents had one of these," Liz remarked, leaning down beside him.

Lucky nodded, "Mine too. I figured we might as well lsiten to some records to pass time of this thing still works."

He set up teh set and put the record in. It was a compilation of old hits, and Liz foun herself recognizing some of them.

Lucky laughed as she began to sing along, "Please, my ears!"

"You're a barrel of laughs tonight Mr.Spencer" Liz told him adn grabbed his collar and started to sing TO him.

Nothing you could say
Can tear me away from my guy
Nothing you could do
Cause I'm stuck like glue to my guy

I'm stickin to my guy like a stamp to a letter
Like the birds of a feather
We stick together..
I will tell you from the start
I can't be torn apart from my guy.

Nothing you can do
Could make me untrue to my guy
Nothing you could buy
Could make me tell a lie to my guy...

I gave my guy my word of honor
To be faithful and I'm gonna
You best be believing
I won't be deceiving my guy...

As a matter of opinion I think he's tops..
My opinion is he's the cream of the crop
As a matter of taste to be exact
He's my ideal as a matter of fact..

No muscle bound man could take my hand from my guy
No handsome face could ever take the play of my guy
He may not be a movie star
But when it comes to be happy we are..
Theres not a man today
who could take me away
From my guy

No muscle bound man could take my hand from my guy
No handsome face could ever take the place of my guy
He may not be a movie star
But when it comes to be happy we are..
Theres not a man today
who could take me away From my guy

Theres not a man today
who could take me away
From my guy

Liz laughed as Lucky started to dance wiht her during the alst verse. He dipped her abckwards, defiantely not in time to the music.

She came up smiling as the next song started. Compared to the last, this one was slower. Liz had heard it played at weddings mostly. She was embarassed to admit to it, but she found it quite romantic to dance to.

She smiled when Lucky did a whole formal bow thing to ask her to dance. She placed ehr hand in his as they began to twirl around their own little dance floor.

I'll always remember the song they were playing
The first time we danced and I knew
As we swayed to the music and held to each other
I fell in love with you

Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?
Would you be my partner every night?
When we're together it feels so right
Could I have this dance
For the rest of my life?

I'll always remember that magic moment
When I held you close to me
As we moved together I knew forever
You're all I'll ever need

Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?
Would you be my partner every night?
When we're together it feels so right
Could I have this dance For the rest of my life?

She smiled at Lucky mouthed along to the song. When it was over, he gently lowered his mouth to hers. As if entranced, she raised her mouth to his. They swayed to the now absent music, their lips using a rythem of their own.
