Chapter Sixteen

Liz curled up next to Lucky in the backseat of the car. After the gas station she had decided to sit in the backseat with him. If anyone had been following htem, they would hvae already realized Lucky was with them.

She tried to sleep as Lucky had been doing earlier, but found it hard to with Lucky touching her face whne he thought she was sleeping. Lucky ran a finger along her jaw, then he traced her lips. He brushed his hand against her cheek.

Liz sighed contentedly as Lucky kissed her softly and opened her eyes. Lucky looked away, embarassed, "YOu could have told me you were awake."

Liz stretched, "And make you stop doing that. Not a chance."

Lucky blushed, "Sorry, I just wanted to, well......"

Liz smiled, "No need to explain." she ahd a hunch why. It was the same reason she ahd been staring intently at him before. He wanted to reassure himself she was real.

Liz lay her head on Lucky's shoulder, cuddling close to him. Lucky didn't object, he just put one arm around ehr shoulder and enfolded her in his warmth.

Lucky inhaled the scent of her hair. THe scent of wildflowers from her shampoo tantalized him. He wanted to bury his nose in her hair, but restrained himself.

Lucky longed to kiss her, to touch her, to run his hands through ehr hair, but he couldn't. Not because Nik was in hte car with them, but because he didn't think he deserved her back.

Not only would he never be able to measure up to the image she probably carried of him, but he wasn't worthy of her. No matter waht she said, he ahd caused her miscarriage. She deserved better tahn a recently escaped prisoner, a man with no job, nothing to offer her but himself.

Liz however, ahd none of these misgivings. Here she was, back with the man that completed her, made her whole. SHe smiled up at him brightly. She felt no danger from that Julius, Helena or anyone when she was with him.

You're toast and jam
And you're cotton candy
You're double rainbows
Beside a setting sun
You're wood burnin' outside
There a fire growin'
You're sweet as green apples
You must be the one

You bring me to the heart of a golden man
You bring the natural truth
You take me to a solid hollow
And keep me sailing in this ocean of youth

That's why you're
You're toast and jam
And you're cotton candy
You're double rainbows
Beside a setting sun
You're wood burnin' outside
There a fire growin'
You're sweet as green apples
You must be the one

So take me to an altar of diamonds
And run with me through the sheets of jungle rain
Show me all your manly mystery
And let me heal your beautiful pain

Be my island in crowds of faces
My oasis
Be there
Lead me to the holy water
Introduce me to the place you are from
Wherever you go you know I will follow
So take me there and I will come, I will come

You're toast and jam
And you're cotton candy
You're double rainbows
Beside a setting sun
You're wood burnin' outside
There a fire growin'
You're sweet as green apples
You must be the one

I say that you're toast and jam
And you're cotton candy
You're double rainbows
Beside a setting sun
You're wood burnin' outside
There a fire growin'
You're sweet as green apples
You must be the one
You're sweet as green apples
You must be the one
You're sweet as green apples
You must be the one.

Liz cuddled closer to Lucky, trying to borrow into him. He smiled at the bittersweet pain of her obvious affection for him. How could he do that to her, make her live a life of pain?

Lucky heard her breath even out as she fell asleep yet again. The lack of sleep the night before had tired her out.

Nik spoke softly from the front seat, "We'll be there soon."

Lucky nodded, "This place will be safe right?"

Nik nodded, "it should. It's a cabin outside of the town nearby. I know the ownners and they were more than happy to let us use the place."

Lucky looked behind them, "I hope nobody's following us."

Nik shrugged, "I don't think anyone is. We would have seen them by now, or been run off the road or something."

Lucky was still nervous, "If Julius or Helena knows where we are...."

Nik shook his head, "Calm down Lucky, it will all work out."

Lucky glanced down at the sleeping Elizabeth, "and if it doesn't, I'll be responsible for your 2 deaths."

Nik sighed, 'Stop being so damn dramatic. We made our choice. Our fate is our responsibility."

"Why did I have to assauge my guilt by talking to her?" Lucky wondered out loud. "She could be safe back in Port Charles, oblivious to the eminent danger."

"And not know you're alive? Trust me, that's wahts best for her. Besides if you hadn't come back when you did......" Nik trailed off, knowing Liz would kill him if he told Lucky.

"What Nik, waht would have happened?" Lucky asked.

Nik just shook his head, "It's not my place to say Lucky. Elizabeth will tell you in her own time. Besides, if you hadn't come back, Elizabeth might be married to me, a man she doesn't love in the slightest."

Lucky sighed and stroked Elizabeths hair. What was Nik being so cryptic about. What would have happened that he prevented from happening by returning?

Nik turned onto a winding road leading into the woods. It was not cemeted, and the jolting of hte car woke Liz up.

She sat up groggily, accidently elbowing Lucky in the ribs. He grunted in pain, placing his hand over his throbbing rib cage.

"I'm so sorry Lucky," Liz apologized, "Are you allright?"

Lucky winced, "I'm fine."

Liz looked at him skeptically as he grimaced in pain, "LEt me see."

BEfore he could object, she lifted his shirt up. AS Lucky felt her cool fingertips pass over his skin, he thought he ahd died and gone to heaven. Gone was the pain that had plauged him moments before.

Liz pressed slightly, "It's not broken or anything, just bruised. I'm so sorry Lucky."

"It's fine," he assured her, grabbing her teasing fingertips and kissing them, "Really."

Liz scarcely heard him. Who knew the simple act of brushing her fingers against his lips could feel so good. SHe could hardly wait to feel his lips upon hers again.

They were interuppted by Nik calling out, "We're here."

Liz looked up to see a beautiful cabin set among the trees surrounding it. SHe gasped, "This is wonderful Nik."

Lucky however, was focusing on a more beautiful sight. Liz's expression of enrapturement fascinated him. She was more lovely than any cabin.

They got out of the car, carrying their bags. Lucky took Liz's from her to carry despite her protests.

They followed Nik to the door. He pulled a key from beneath the welcome mat and opened the door.

"Welcome to out temporary home," he said, walking in. Lucky and Liz followed him. The 'cabin' looked as big inside as it had from the outside.

"HOw much is it costing you to rent this place?" Lucky asked looking around, "I'm not sure I can afford to stay here."

Nik shook his head, "There's no reason to pay me back. It's not costing me a cent, I called in a few favours."

"They must have been some pretty big favours," Liz remarked, "Somehting tells me I won't need the sleeping bag I brought alaong."

Nik shook his head, "No. There' 3 bedrooms completely furnished."

Liz hoped they would only need two, but Lucky didn't hesitate to set her bags in a different room from his, although they were across the hall from each other.

"Thanks Lucky," she remarked, as he set her suiotcase down on the bed.

"No problem," he smiled. He seemed to hesitate, but quickly left the room.

Liz sighed as she began to unpack. What was with Lucky. They were reunited after 4 years and he seemed so uncomfortable. She hoped it had mothing to do wiht Nikolas. Lucky had better understand there was nobody but him, especially not Nikolas.

Nik called out from below, "I'm going to town to call back to Port Charles. i don't want them to trace hte call to this cabin. Think you two can amuse yourself for the evening?"

Liz opened her door, as Lucky did the same across the hall, "I think we can manage Nikolas."
