Sarah Buxton's brazen Annie Richards is selfish and shallow and not afraid to show it. She says what's on her mind - no matter how hurtful or outlandish. Buxton's silky, self-confident delivery betrays not a hint of embarrassment at what Annie says or feels.

But when Annie ventured to The Deep one night - friendless and penniless - we got a rare glimpse of Annie stripped of all bravado, her raw insecurity on display. At the bar, her voice tremulous and her motions awkward, Annie bemoaned her lack of friends. One tanked bar patron recognized her for the victim she was feeling like and pounced, attacking her when she left the bar. Stranger Jude Cavanaugh came to a frightened Annie's rescue.

"You're amazing," a shaken Annie stuttered. "I don't know what he would have done if you hadn't come." When Jude barely acknowledged her, a confused Annie followed him inside.

Sizing the handsome Jude up as someone with money got Annie's juices flowing again, and she reverted to her tried-and-true foxy form. "I know just about everyone who is worth knowing in this town, and I've never seen you," Annie purred. "So, where are you from?"

With her consistently spirited and flamboyant portrayal, Buxton has lent a unique sense of fun to Annie. The performer's quietly powerful depiction of Annie at her lowest point revealed yet another side to the character, a more pensive and cautious one. Kudos to Buxton for creating a character who always keeps us guessing - and smiling.
