    22-Year WCBS-TV Veteran Reporter to Host Popular Consumer Report

    Arnold Diaz, a 22-year veteran of WCBS-TV, is returning to CBS 2 and will revive the celebrated SHAME ON YOU feature for which he won 25 Emmy Awards during his tenure at the station. The announcement was made today by Dianne Doctor, Vice President and News Director, WCBS-TV New York.

    SHAME ON YOU regularly exposed wrongdoings and incompetence by private industry and government agencies, and often led to actions by law enforcement officials, as well as the enactment of legislation.

    Arnold Diaz is one of the nations leading Consumer/investigative reporters," said Doctor. "Audiences have for many years responded positively to his SHAME ON YOU reports making it one of the best know franchises in the market. Diaz’s return will allow us to establish CBS 2 as the leader in consumer reporting, and everyone at the station is thrilled to welcome him back where he belongs."

    Diaz previously worked for WCBS-TV from 1973 through 1995. Among his notable reports was an investigation into school custodians padding their payroll with relatives, and failing to do their required work; uncovering a taxi-cab ring ripping off tourists at Grand Central Station; proving how Medicare and Medicaid were wasting millions of taxpayer dollars by overpaying for bandages; catching electronic stores selling used merchandise as new, and confronting a Postal Service letter-carrier illegally charging welfare recipients to deliver their government checks.

    He also caught jewelers on camera selling underkarrated gold; confronted auto dealers advertising specials that didn’t exist; cornered chimney sweeps who carry loose bricks and dead birds as price-gouging scams, and showed how home health care attendants with violent criminal pasts were being hired and sent into the homes of vulnerable elderly citizens.

    In addition to Diaz’s reporting for the station, he was the senior correspondent for five one-hour, primetime specials broadcast on the CBS Television Network. He was also a regular contributor to CBS THIS MORNING, and was inducted into the National Academy of Arts and Sciences Silver Circle in 1995. Prior to joining WCBS-TV, Diaz was a reporter for WPLG-TV in Miami.

    Diaz has worked for ABC News’ "20/20" since May 1995 as a consumer reporter. He won the National Press Club Consumer Journalism Award and the Consumer Federation of America Media Service Award. While at ABC, Diaz reported on Metabolife’s claims regarding its popular diet pill, uncovered a major auto accident ring bilking insurers for millions, exposed a high-tech scam which billed added charges on consumers’ telephone bills for services they never received, and reported an undercover investigation which examined why black shoppers are often unfairly targeted by department store security personnel and salespeople as potential thieves.

    His other reports included an investigation into the forced commitment of elderly people for profit psychiatric hospitals that led to corrective legislation and changes in Medicare policy. His investigation into the epidemic problem of e-coli contaminated ground beef has been praised by both the Food and Drug Administration and the meat industry.

    Diaz was born in Brooklyn. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Florida State University, and received his Master’s degree in journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Chicago.     Mario Bosquez Joins CBS 2

    Mario Bosquez, a nine-year veteran of WNYW-TV, joins CBS 2 as reporter/anchor, it was announced today by Dianne Doctor, Vice President and News Director, WCBS-TV. The appointment is effective on January 6, 2003.

    "Mario is an outstanding anchor and reporter, and a significant asset to CBS 2’s roster of talent," said Doctor. "With more than 24 years in television news, Mario is an extremely knowledgeable and experienced journalist who has distinguished himself in the community. We are delighted to welcome him to the station."

    For the past nine years, Bosquez has held a variety of positions at FOX 5 New York, most recently as anchor of "Fox Five News at 11:30AM," co-anchor of "Good Day Wake Up" and "Good Day New York First Edition." He joined WNYW-TV in 1993 as Long Island correspondent and has also served as general assignment reporter and weekend anchor. His credits at the station include reports from the 1996 Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta, Ga., Hurricane George in Puerto Rico, the Colombia Earthquake, the Pope’s Visit to Cuba and Hurricane Floyd in the Carolina’s.

    Prior to joining FOX 5, Bosquez worked for KSAT-TV San Antonio (1979-93). He began as a reporter and also was emcee for the station’s live parade coverage. He later served as co-host of "PM Magazine," and anchor of "Good Morning San Antonio" and "KSAT 12 News at Noon." His first job in broadcasting was at San Antonio’s KTSA Radio as newsreader (1978).

    Bosquez has won numerous awards for his work, including an "Americares" award, which was presented to him by President and Mrs. George Bush, and the Si Se Puede! Award from the National Puerto Rican Forum. He was also recognized by the City of New York for his work as a Latino in the media and is the recipient of two honors from the Latino Coalition for Fair Media.

    Additionally, Bosquez annually hosts the Hispanic Federation’s year-end gala, and is a supporter of the Humane Society.

    He is also a playwright and novelist. His full-length play, "Los Duendes" (The Restless Spirits), was named finalist in the 2000 Paul Green Playwrighting Competition and semifinalist in the Southwest Festival for New Plays/Latino Division.

    Bosquez was born in Alice, Texas, and was graduated in 1978 from Trinity University in San Antonio with a degree in broadcast journalism and Spanish. He resides in New York City. Posted 1/6/03

    WABC-TV Maintains Strength Opposite Olympics During Nielsen's February'02 Sweeps; Eyewitness News Wins 6PM News Race

    Even with Olympic competition on 17 of 28 days, WABC-TV turns in a silver medal-winning performance in Nielsen's February '02 sweeps, posting a 4.5 rating/10 share, Monday-Sunday Sign-on to Sign-off. Further evidence of the station's overall strength is seen in the stability of ABC/7's January'02 to February'02 performance, as well as in the station's continued dominance in several key dayparts despite February'02's atypical Olympic competition.

    * "Eyewitness News" continues to be the top-rated newscast at 6pm. Anchored by Diana Williams and Bill Ritter, this edition of "Eyewitness News" posts a 7.4 rating/13 share.

    * "ABC World News Tonight" with Peter Jennings wins the network news race at 6:30pm, delivering an 8.1 rating/14 share.

    * "Live! with Regis and Kelly" and "Rosie O'Donnell" both win their respective time periods, each growing one-tenth of a rating point over January'02.

    * "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel of Fortune" on ABC/7 remain the dominant prime access programs, delivering an 11.8 rating/20 share and an 11.8 rating/19 share, respectively. Both programs outdeliver the combined performances of any two of their respective time period competitors.

    * In a down-to-the-wire race, only 13,000 TV households separate the 5am edition of "Eyewitness News" from a first place finish. Anchored by Lori Stokes and Steve Bartelstein, this newscast posts a 2.2 rating/13 share, finishing a very close second to WNBC'S "Today In NY 1."

    * At 6am, "Eyewitness News This Morning" shows rating and share growth of 9% and 7%, respectively, over its prior month's performance. Also anchored by Lori Stokes and Steve Bartelstein, this newscast delivers a 3.6 rating/15 share.
