Ch. 54

Brenda stared at her husband. "What didn't I tell you?"

"Why you ran to NYC, instead of staying and telling me that you were 
pregnant?"

"Sonny, what was I suppose do to? I mean we had broken up, before I knew 
for sure and when I did know, I called you. When you were late I figured 
you were just running behind, so I went upstairs. And that's when I 
found... Well anyway, I just figured... It doesn't really matter any 
more, it's over."

She looked away. She couldn't look at him. She kept seeing him in bed 
with Lily. It was making her sick.

"Brenda, you figured what?"

"Huh?" She hadn't been listening. "What are you talking about?"

"You said that when you found us you figured.. what? That I was glad you 
were gone?"

She didn't say anything. She didn't like where this conversation was 
going.

"Brenda?"

"I thought you finally got who you wanted all along. OK? I thought you 
wanted to be with Lily." 

Sonny couldn't believe what she had just said.

"How, why would you ever think that?"

"Sonny, you were ALWAYS defending her, or having long soulful 
conversations with her. You trusted her and respected her more than me. 
She could do no wrong and I couldn't do anything right. So when I found 
you two in bed, well..."

"So that's why you thought I had been having an affair with her?" Brenda 
cast her eyes towards the ground. "Brenda, sweetheart, I'm sorry. I 
never meant to treat her that way. I thought she was my friend, but I 
NEVER loved anybody or wanted anybody but you. I'm so sorry that I hurt 
you. I guess I didn't treat you very well did I?"

"Sonny..." She was interrupted by Simone.

They both looked up. "Well, what happened?"


Ch 55

"She came through with flying colors. She's gonna be okay."

"Oh God. Simone thank you so much." Brenda stood up and hugged her and 
then Sonny hugged her. Then Sonny picked up Brenda and spun her around.

"It's gonna be okay baby. We won't lose our little girl." He whispered 
in her ear. She pulled back to look in his eyes.

"And we won't lose each other. Ever." She kissed him gently.

"I love you. "

"Yeah? Take me home and prove it." She teased.

"Your wish is my command. Simone can we see Katie?"

"For a little while and then go home."

"Yes sir." Sonny and Brenda went to see their daughter.

"She's perfect."

"Just like her mom."

"Sonny take me home."

Brenda checked herself out in the mirror. She'd bought this nightgown 
more than a year ago and this was the first time she was gonna wear it.

"Any time Bren."

"You know patience is a virtue."

"Not one of mine."

"Mine either. Okay here we go." She walked into the bedroom. "So what do 
you think?"

"You look gorgeous."

"Sonny, are we gonna be alright?"

"C'mere." She went over to him and straddled him. "We're gonna be better 
than alright, you know why?"

"Why?"

"Because we were meant to be." She bent her head and kissed him, as she 
started to unbutton his shirt. His hands went to the straps on her 
nightgown and it slipped down her body. As they made love they knew it 
was always gonna be like this. They had their whole lives ahead of them 
and this was only the beginning.

"Sonny I'm gonna have another baby."

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"Who gives this woman in marriage?" Sonny took Brenda's hand.

"Her mother, her sisters, her brothers, and I do." Katie smiled at her 
family before returning her attention to her husband.

Sonny laid in bed holding Brenda.

"Promise me something?" he whispered as her eyes filled with tears.

"Anything."

"Don't keep me waiting up there too long."

"I won't. I love you."

"I love you." She reached up and kissed him as the life slipped out of 
him and went away.
