Michael T. Weiss
as Jarod in NBC's "The Pretender"
In 1996 Michael T. Weiss was cast in the lead role of Jarod in "The Pretender", a television series which aired on NBC during the network's Saturday Night Thrillogy, which included "The Pretender", "Dark Skies", "Sleepwalkers" and "Profiler". The bulk of the Thrillogy seemed to fall apart, and only "The Pretender" and "Profiler" survived the network's axe. "The Pretender" has now been renewed for its third season. "It's the little television series that could," said Michael T. Weiss in a recent television interview. "It's doing boffo in the ratings... I'm so blessed to be a part of it."
Weiss plays a man of innate genius, a "pretender", who can literally become anyone he chooses to be. With each episode Jarod has a different occupation and identity, but is so convincing in every "deception" that no one seems to notice that he's not at all who he says he is. Actually, Jarod doesn't really know who he is yet. He knows he was stolen from his family when he was 4 years old, and he knows he was isolated in The Centre for over 30 years. He knows what his mother looks like, and he knows he has a brother (Kyle, who died in season two) and a sister (Emily), but he doesn't know his (or their) last name, or anything about his family's history. He might be Margaret and Charles' natural child... or he might be adopted.
After discovering that his genius was being exploited for nefarious purposes, Jarod escaped from The Centre, and now uses his pretender skills to protect the innocent, encourage the down trodden, and put as many evil-doers in prison as he possibly can. The Centre isn't happy about his leaving, however, and regularly sics "Sweepers", "Cleaners", and a persistent woman name Miss Parker after him to try to re-capture him and isolate him again. The Centre is also bent on killing his extended family, thus depriving him of any knowledge of his true identity. It was discovered that Jarod was a natural born pretender, so The Centre tries to use him as blueprint or prototype in their experiments to create a new generation of pretenders.
Jarod is sometimes aided (and sometimes confused) by a psychiatrist in The Centre named Sydney, who raised Jarod while he was in The Centre's custody. Jarod also sometimes calls upon the computer wizardry of a Centre Tech Room worker named Broots (whether Broots wants him to or not), and the information and support supplied by Angelo (an empath who remains at The Centre).

The Pretender at NBC.
THE PRETENDER: SEASON THREE, 1998-
(43) "CRAZY": Jarod posed as a patient in a mental institution in order to rescue another patient who was being confined there against her will, and to discover the truth about the murder of third patient. In this episode, viewers learned that everyone lived through the explosion in SL-27 except for Gar the Cleaner; Sydney was blinded by the explosion; and Mr. Raines was left confined to a wheelchair. Viewers also learned that Mr. Lyle was Miss Parker's fraternal twin brother, and that Mr. Parker "pulled strings" to see to it that his son was returned to the employment of The Centre... as one of those responsible for the pursuit and capture of Jarod. Miss Parker was not amused.
(44) "Hope and Prey": Jarod posed as a bounty hunter in order to protect a Native American man falsely accused of bombing a mining rig. The man, Mike Bodie, also proved to be a valuable link to Jarod's past for he'd met and had some belongings of Major Charles, Jarod's father. Jarod procured a photograph of Charles, and also received as a gift a "dream catcher" his father had made during a "dream quest" of tribal land. Meanwhile, Miss Parker discovered that Mr. Fenigor was alive -- but brainwashed -- in the bowels of the Renewal Wing, and that an archival box held the gun that murdered her mother, Catherine. Sydney also regained some of his sight. [Jarod discovers "Red Vines" candy.]
(45) "Once in a Blue Moon": Jarod posed as a criminal psychologist working for the Department of Justice in order to discover who was responsible for the copy-cat kidnapping of a young woman. Knowing that the kidnapping was identical to one he had helped the authorities with 20 years earilier, Jarod put himself face-to-face with the serial killer he had helped to incarcerate back then. Often regressing into an almost childlike persona, Jarod faced his own fears and "failures", and managed to discover where the new kidnapper was before he could kill his victim. In this episode, viewers discovered that the original serial killer had kidnapped Mr. Raines' daughter, Annie, in the 70's... and that Jarod had been unsuccessful in discovering the kidnapper's identity before the kidnapper murdered Annie and hid her remains.
(46) "Someone to Trust": Jarod posed as an arsonist in an attempt to discover who was repsonsible for an arson fire that killed several people. When he found out that the arson and murders had been committed by a woman he starting to fall in love with, Jarod is again faced with the reality that there are few people he can truly trust. He put his own emotion aside, however, and was able to bring the woman, and her accomplice, to justice. In the meanwhile, Miss Parker discovered that her brother, Mr. Lyle, was once married... and that his mail order bride had been beaten to death (presumably by Lyle himself).
THE PRETENDER: SEASON TWO, 1997-1998
(22) "BACK FROM THE DEAD AGAIN": Jarod posed as a professor of gross anatomy in order to find out who was responsible for the disappearance of a student a year earlier. When he found that the student had been buried alive by another one of the professors, Jarod retaliated against the man by burying him, too, in a coffin with a glass lid (so he could see the dirt being piled on top of him). Jarod also discovered the truth about the horrific nightmares he'd been having about a ghastly experiment performed on him, against his will, by Mr. Raines and Mr. Lyle when he was in The Centre. (The experiment included Jarod being injected with heart-stopping drugs and put into a deep freeze until he "flat-lined". Raines then scrambled to bring him back to life, while Lyle watched and did nothing.) In this episode, we were introduced to Mr. Lyle and a "cleaner" named Brigitte. As a "first of the season" episode, this one was excellent, and is a "Fan's Favorite". [Jarod discovers Halloween.]
(23) "SCOTT FREE": Jarod assumed the role of a one-armed safe-cracker in order to help a newly paroled thief retain his freedom and the custody of his young son. Jarod also soughttore-establish more of a father-son relationship with Sydney, who responded to Jarod's overtures by telling him that he could not assume a fatherly role because he wasn't Jarod's father. Meanwhile, at The Centre, Mr. Lyle vied for Mr. Parker's position during Mr.Parker's absence. [Jarod discovers the Wheel-O toy.]
(24) "OVER THE EDGE": Jarod joined the USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) team in order to find out what really happened to another USAR worker who was left in a coma for a short time, and then regained consciousness only to be found to be suffering from partial amnesia. Meanwhile, Jarod searched through ramshackle hotels and drug clinics in order to find the man's long-lost mother, and used a sensory deprivation tank to form a mental connection between himself and his own missing mother. Miss Parker also found out that maybe she wasn't a "Parker" afterall. [Jarod discovers Spiderman, watermelon, and the She-Hulk.]
(25) "EXPOSED":Jarod became a fashion photographer in order to find out who was responsible for the stalking of -- and apparentdeath of -- a high-profile fashion model. He discovered that the perpetrator was one of the people working at the same Studio as the models; and also found out that the model everyone thought was dead, was actually alive, and living in hiding. In this episode, too, viewers found out that Kyle was still alive, and was using a camera to stalk Broots and Miss Parker. We also found out that Angelo, "the sponge", was actually empathic. [Jarod discovers View Masters]
(26) "NIP AND TUCK":Jarod posed as a plastic surgeon in this episode in order to find and expose another surgeon who left a young patient horribly disfigured. Riddled with one-liners, this episode was probably one of the most humorous ones, but had its dark side, too: especially in the scene in which Jarod strapped the offending surgeon to a gurney and pretended to harvest her skin from her (for grafts for another patient) against her will.[Jarod discovers clay-dough.]Because of its often humorous content, this episode was a "Fans' Favorite".
(27) "PAST SIM": Mr. Lyle over-stepped his authority at The Centre and used one of Jarod's simulations to kill a Federal agent and steal a witness scheduled to testify in court against the head of the Japanese mafia (the "Yakuza"). When Jarod found out that his simulation was subverted, he declared "war" on Lyle and The Centre and not only saw to it that the witness made it to court on time, but also saw to it that the yakuza felt betrayed and exposed by Mr. Lyle and hunted him down.[Jarod discovers the Magic 8-Ball toy.]
(28) "COLLATERAL DAMAGE": While in Washington D.C. trying to find some information about his father, Jarodtook on the role of an Army Ranger. He used his position to discover the truth about the death of a soldier in the Vietnam War who was branded a traitor and died after stepping on a toe-popper landmine. [Jarod discovers jello.]
(29) "HAZARDS": Jarod joined a haz-mat team in order to find out who was really responsible for a poisonous chemical spill that killed three people. When he discovered that the people were killed to hide a drug-smuggling operation, Jarod sealed the smuggler in a hazardous materials container and threatened to drown him in the same concentrated pesticide that killed his three victims. In a side story, Sydney trakced down and tried to kill a Nazi doctor who had butchered his entire family (except for his twin brother Jacob) during the war. [Jarod discovers Twinkees, fishing lures, and 99-Bottles of Beer on the Wall.]
(30) "FX": Jarod entered the world of special effects in his attempt to discover why a firey car stunt got out of control and severely burned a stunt driver. When he found out that the person responsible for the blaze was an advertising agent (who added home-made napalm to the effect to make it brighter and more impressive for TV), Jarod strapped the woman in a car and drove the car through a billboard in order to terrify her into a confession. (Sometimes our guy can be pretty brutal to the bad guys... er, bad gals.) In side stories, Miss Parker was unable to find out the identity and purpose of a mysterious man named "Fenigor", but she, Broots and Sydney were able to discover that Angelo's real name was "Timmy". [Jarod discovers the Bud-Weis-Er frogs and model cars.]
(31) "INDY SHOW": Jarod became a race-car driver in order to discover why a young driver was injured in a crash -- in a car his older brother was supposed to be driving that day. It turned out that the accident was caused by another driver on the team who was afraid that he was about to be replaced; and the younger brother was driving the tampered-with car that day because his older brother was incapacitated by nerve damage that made his hand and arm almost impossible to control. In an aside: Sydney's brother Jacob regained consciousness again, but only for a day, after which he died. And Sydney admitted it was he who shot Raines in Boston (during the "Dragon House" episode). Real race car drivers appeared in cameos in this episode, along with an NBC big-wig, Don Ohlmeyer. [Jarod discovers "groupees".]
(32) "GIGOLO JAROD": In a much-anticipated episode, Jarod took up the occupation as a lover-for-hire in order to get close to a woman who was going to spearhead a project that would tear down an existing apartment complex and replace it with a high-rise building. Parts of the episode were humorous in that Jarod seemed unusually adept at getting out of having to actually "put out" for his female clients. We learned that Jarod also penned a romance novel about Miss Parker called, "The Saddest Little Valentine". When he later attempted to "court" Miss Parker as his Valentine, she spurned him. [Jarod discovers Valentine's Day and cupid.] This episode is a "Fans' Favorite" even if it DIDN'T live up to its advertisements.
(33) "TOY SURPRISE": Jarod posed as a counselor/guide for a teenager, while Miss Parker used all of her considerable wits and strength to try to stop Brigitte from assassinating Mr. Parker. We knew Jarod had faked the jeep crash that left him injured, but it was fun to see the amulance attendant's expression, at the end of the episode, when Jarod removed his leg splint and simply walked away. We also got to see Mr. Parker grieve for his dead wife in this episode.
(34) "A STAND UP GUY": Jarod worked as both a counterfeiter and an undercover RICO agent in order to find out who really committed the murder of another undercover cop. He found out that a US Prosecutor was taking kick-back money from the mob, and framing an innocent man for the agent's murder. In retaliation Jarod locked two of the mobsters and the prosecutor in a giant walk-in freezer and left them there for Federal agents to pick up later. (Weiss's Jarod fits so easily in the "mobster" role that it's kind of eerie to watch him.) [Jarod discovers Sno-Ball cakes]
(35) "AMNESIA": Jarod couldn't remember who he was for a while in this episode, after he was bashed in the head by an angry trucker. Using flashbacks from the previous season, the writers filled new viewers in on what had happened to Jarod to date, and how he had influenced Miss Parker, Broots and Syndey thusfar. Aided by an opportunistic bum named Argyle... and the spirit-like presence of his mother, Jarod re-discovers who he is just in time to thwart an attempt by Brigitte (now being called "Bridget") to capture him.
(36) "Bullet Proof": Jarod joined the SWAT team and discovered that three of his co-workers were in league with a Russian mobster. When the three colluded to kill a fourth team member, and left the man's sons without any parents, Jarod worked to expose them. In this episode, we discovered that Jarod could speak fluent Russian... and that Sydney had a son he never knew about before. [Jarod discovers Chia Pets.]
(37) "Silence": Jarod became a child psychologist and helped a young witness regain his capacity to speak when, after witnessing a murder and being threatened by the killer, the boy withdrew into a shell of silence. While helping the boy, Jarod was forced to explore the trauma he himself endured as a child. At the Centre, Miss Parker rescued Mr. Raines from an assault only to find that his assailant was, Dannie, another person who had been stolen by The Centre and turned into a multiple-personalitied assassin by Raines. [Jarod discovers chocolate milk.]
(38)"Crash": Jarod became an investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board after a young man, to whom Jarod had given up his seat on an airplane, died when the plane suddenly crashed. Filled with "survivor's guilt", Jarod pushed himself to discover that the plane had crashed because one of the pilots was flying under the influence of illegal narcotics... and also saved the co-pilot from an attempted suicide. In the meantime, viewers discovered some of the deatils about Mr. Lyle's topsy-turvy childhood in Nebraska (which included an adoptive father who locked him in a cell-like shed, and a mother who cared for dogs that didn't actually exist); and came to the realization that Lyle had faked his death as a teenager (by placing a headless corpse in the bed of his step-father's pick-up truck), and had probably faked his death again when Miss Parker shot him (by placing a headless corpse in the river in which the shot-up Lyle had fallen).
(39) "Stolen": Jarod posed as an eccentric millionaire in order to negotiate with a kidnapper who had stolen the millionaire's son and was threatening to kill him. Jarod was sometimes helped and sometime encumbered by the millionaire's head of security who didn't know whether he could truly trust Jarod or not -- especially when he found out that Jarod wasn't at all who he said he was. In this episode, too, Jarod suffered the throes of "post traumatic shock syndrome" as he relived the events of his own kidnapping, by The Centre, as a child. In a thrilling climax of this episode, Jarod was re-captured by Miss Parker... but only briefly. [We learn in this episode that Jarod was once given the gift of a "Bonanza" lunchbox by his mother.] This episode is a "Fans' Favorite".
(40) "Red Rock Jarod": Jarod went to a small desert town looking for Sydney and clues to his past, but was surprised, instead, to find himself turned over to Mr. Lyle by the local police and made a prisoner in a ramshackle "compound" (complete with trash-lined walls and a vicious guard dog). Both Lyle and Jarod were then surprised further when Kyle reappeared (to save Jarod), and Miss Parker showed up in town (intending to take Jarod as a prisoner herself).[We learn in this episode that Jarod has AB-Negative blood type.] This episode is a "Fans' Favorite".
(41) "Bank": Jarod managed to get Miss Parker to join him at the Dover Town Bank so the two of them could meet and confront Mr. Fenigor: a man who knew about Jarod's background, and was a personal friend of Catherine Parker. Unfortunately, the bank was robbed, and Mr. Fenigor was shot (and severely wounded but not killed). He managed to tell them about secret "Red Files"and a project called PRODIGY; and he apologized to Jarod for taking him from his family. Miss Parker discovered that her father lied to her -- again -- and that he had been paying Mr. Fenigor "hush money" for 28 years (starting right after Catherine Parker's murder).
(42) "Bloodlines": Jarod did two pretends in this episode: one as a fertility expert called Jarod Spock, and one as a 3rd grade substitute teacher called Jarod Kotter. He thwarted Mr. Raines attempt to re-establish the PRODIGY experiments, and tried to assist Angelo in regaining his "Timmy" identity. Jarod found a few links to his own past, including a photograph of himself as an infant in the arms of his mom, Margaret, but he still isn't sure if Margaret is his biological mother or his adoptive mother. Sadly, too, Mr. Fenigor told him that his father -- the man in the dark suit -- had murdered Catherine Parker. The episode ended with a huge fiery explosion in SL-27, set off by none other than... Sydney. Who survived it? You'll have to wait for season three. This episode is a "Fans' Favorite".
THE PRETENDER: SEASON ONE, 1996-1997
(01) "PILOT": Newly escaped from The Centre, Jarod poses as a thoracic surgeon in an attempt to find out why a boy, who should have survived a spinal cord injury, was left paralyzed after being operated on. In one part of the episode, Jarod fakes a fire in the hotel where Miss Parker and Sydney are staying, so he can have a moment to speak to Sydney alone. Eventually, Jarod evades Miss Parker and prevails over the bad guys, exposing the surgeon who originally operated on the young boy as an alcoholic fraud. [Jarod discovers ice cream.]
(02) "EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY": Jarod joins the Coast Guard in order to find out what happened to a fisherman who was supposedly lost at sea. After discovering how much fun Oreo cookies are, Jarod also discovered that the fisherman was killed by two other Coast Guard officers after he found out they were running contraband on the high seas. Fans got to see Michael T. Weiss in swimming trunks in the first part of this episode, as Jarod taught himself how to swim and to tread water at a local YMCA. They also got to see Jarod painting a sad portrait of Miss Parker as a little girl, crying over the death of her mother. [Jarod discovers Oreos and novelty toys, including fake dog poop.]
(03) "FLYER": Jarod became a jet aircraft test pilot for a company called Skyvionics to expose the truth about an "accident" that left another pilot dead. He discovered that the company's much bally-hooed "scimitar computer chip" is a piece of junk that seemed to fail whenever it was needed the most.
(04) "CURIOUS JAROD": Jarod went to Las Vegas and posed as a security manager in order to find out who was responsible for the beating death of a young showgirl. Jarod proved he's a natural at games of chance -- breaking the house bank at one point -- but didn't really have the "gambler's bug". In a somewhat humorous scene: When Miss Parker and her cronies closed in on him, he saw to it that she was subjected to a strip search after claiming she was probably "palming chips" from the gambling casino. In this episode Jarod also pretended to be a Las Vegas police officer, a member of the National Wildlife Federation, and was a junkyard tenant named Jarod Woods.
(05) "THE PAPER CLOCK": While Jarod defended a mentally retarded man from a murder charge, he was helped by a transvestite cab driver named Isaac. It was interesting to note Jarod's reaction to Isaac. After getting over the initial shock of seeing a large black man in a dress, he simply treated Isaac like any other human being and never questioned Isaac's choice of attire. We saw in this episode, too, the first real hint of Jarod's on-going nightmares (as caused by his time in The Centre). He dreamed about his faceless mother, and later implored Sydney to let him find out what she really looked like. Against The Centre's wishes, Sydney sent Jarod a dated photograph of his mother: a soft-featured red-head. [Jarod discovers Rubics Cube]
(06) "TO SERVE AND PROTECT": Jarod joined a Florida police department, to find out who really killed a young security guard at a jewelry store. He determined the killing was actually a murder perpetrated by two other police officers. With the help of a motorcycle riding granny, Jarod exposed the officers' as criminals. In this episode, too, Jarod was Express Mailed a file, from an anonymous sender, that contained information about his true identity. Before he could open it, though, Miss Parker brandished a gun and managed to get the mailer from him. [Jarod discovers doughnuts.]
(07) "A VIRUS AMONG US": Jarod entered the eerie world of virology in order to find out what happened to a man who supposedly disappeared on the eve of his daughter's birthday. When Jarod found the man's body in the RIDA morgue, he plotted to trap the killer by "infecting" him with a Level 5 mutant virus. In this episode, too, Jarod turned a hotel room into "the world's largest roach motel" and trapped Miss Parker and Sam the Sweeper in it. [Jarod discovers roach motels and Crunchy Crawlers Cereal.]
(08) "NOT EVEN A MOUSE": In this Christmastime episode, Jarod posed as a coroner's assistant in order to discover who was responsible for the hit-and-run killing of a neighborhood "Santa". When he discovered that it was the coroner herself who did the killing, he confronted her with the truth... and then "killed" her with tainted fruitcake. The scene of the coroner (paralyzed but still alive) being wheeled into the morgue for an autopsy was one of the creepiest scenes "The Pretender" ever presented to fans. But this ghastly scene was balanced by an endearing one of a free and happy Jarod spin-dancing in the falling snow. [Jarod discovers Christmas, candycanes, and fruitcake.]
(09) "MIRAGE": Jarod posed as a sky diving instructor in order to find out what really happened to his predecessor: a man who sky dived into the desert, and then died there from apparent exposure. Jarod discovered that the man died because his canteen had been poisoned with belladonna... and his murderer was his ex-girlfriend and co-worker. Jarod also posed as an IRS agent in this episode, named Buddy Slocolm, Jr. [Jarod discovers popcycles.]
(10) "THE BETTER PART OF VALOR": Jarod posed as a firefighter, and found out that the fire chief was an arsonist who cashed-in after warehouse fires by filing fraudulent claims against insurance companies. In a frightening scene, Jarod handcuffed the chief in his burning house, and then threw the keys to the handcuffs into a pool of fire, daring the man to save himself. [Jarod discovers "insta-cheese" and Dalmatian dogs.]
(11) "POTATO HEAD BLUES": Jarod joined the bomb squad to expose the true identity of "The Fax Bomber": a wannabe co-worker with a penchant for tall tales. Jarod also posed as a teacher for the blind, helping one of the Fax Bomber's victims recover from a blast that robbed her of her eyesight. During this episode, a co-worker "aged" Jarod's photograph of his mother so he could see what she'd look like in the present, and at The Centre, Angelo defied Mr. Raines by hiding Jarod's enhanced photograph from him.[Jarod discovers cigars and Mr. Potato Head.]
(12) "PRISON STORY": Jarod impersonated a prison guard, overseeing the security of a death-row inmate scheduled to be terminated for the killing of another prisoner. He found out that the death row in-mate was innocent, and that the prisoner was actually killed by other guards (who were assassins being paid to knock off enemies of an influential crime syndicate). At the end of the episode, he got a confession out of one guard, and then locked another one in the gas chamber... and flipped the "on" switch. [Jarod discovers "Slinky" toys.]
(13) "BAZOOKA JAROD": Jarod posed as a lieutenant on a navy destroyer to find out who was responsible for the death of a crewman during an emergency drill. He also hooked up with a renegade teenage girl and reunited her with her too-busy mother. Miss Parker nearly succeeded in exposing Jarod as a "pretender" in this episode, and was only moments away from being able to capture him, but.... [Jarod discovers bubblegum.]
(14) "RANGER JAROD": Jarod posed as a forest ranger and helped to search for an ornithology student who went missing after attempting to record the nesting habits of eagles. Jarod discovered that the young man was nearly killed by another (drug running) ranger, who left him to die in an abandoned mine shaft. In this episode, Jarod, at the age of 30-something, lost his virginity to an Argentinean woman named Nia. [Jarod discovers sex.] This episode is a "Fans' Favorite".
(15) "JAROLDO!": Jarod took on a job as a television videographer in order to expose a headline grabbing newscaster whose reckless tactics resulted in a gangland shooting that left a cameraman partially paralyzed by a bullet. In the meanwhile, Miss Parker and Sydney were trapped in the basement of a condemned building after an attack by looters which left Sydney with a gunshot wound in the leg. The scenes of Jarod's interaction with the gang members are the best parts of this episode. [Jarod discovers acupuncture, the official rules of basketball, and pizza.]
(16) "UNDER THE REDS": In a very touching episode, Jarod worked to perfect a drug therapy that could cure coma patients. He succeeded in curing Sydney's twin brother Jacob, but the effect was only temporary and Jacob eventually withdrew into his coma again -- after writing two notes to Sydney: "SL-27" and "NOT YOUR FAULT". Jarod then stood by to offer comfort to a set of parents who had to make the decision to take their comatose son off of life support so his organs be donated to others who could use them. In a parallel story, an overly fastidious Human Resources person found out that Jarod wasn't who he said he was, and nearly exposed him as a "pretender". This is another "Fans' Favorite" episode. [Jarod discovers lucky rabbits feet.]
(17) "KEYS": In a dark episode Jarod was trapped on an island in the Florida Keys by a hurricane and Miss Parker, who bounds him in handcuffs and celebrated his capture with champagne. When a child in Jarod's custody became ill, however, Miss Parker reluctantly worked with Jarod to find the child the medication she needed to survive. Jarod also gave Miss Parker a key to one of her mother's safe deposit boxes. This one held Catherine Parker's wedding ring, a medical report telling of a brutal beating Catherine suffered shortly before her death, and a list of children's names: "the unlucky ones", including Jarod, whom Catherine was unable to rescue from The Centre. This is another "Fans' Favorite" episode.
(18) "UNHAPPY LANDINGS": Jarod posed as US Marshal in an attempt to bring an escaped suspect back in safely to face criminal charges. The suspect, though, was being hunted down by other members of the marshals force and was reluctant to trust Jarod. When the suspect finally turned himself in to Jarod's custody, he and Jarod found their lives endangered when the airplane they were on malfunctioned in mid-flight... and the other passengers turned on them. [Jarod discovers SPAM.]
(19) "JAROD'S HONOR": Jarod assumed the identity of a limping hit-man in order to find out why a Louisiana crime boss wanted a restaurant owner and his wife killed. In a quirky part of the episode, Jarod kept the body of the real hit-man (who died at the beginning of the episode from natural causes) on ice in the shower stall of his hotel room. In the meanwhile, Jarod also discovered the truth about a private investigator named Sonny Herbert; and Sydney got a clue (at a Twins Convention) as to what really happened to his brother Jacob. Miss Parker attempted to quit smoking. This episode made full use of Michael T. Weiss's ability to look positively malevolent, and also surprised some fans by showing Jarod submerged in a bathtub for one scene. This episode is a "Fans' Favorite".
(20) "BABY LOVE": When Jarod found a baby discarded in a dumpster, he wouldn't stop until he found the child's mother, and exposed the police detective who tried to kill them both. Meanwhile, at The Centre, Miss Parker, Sydney and Broots ventured into the secret -- and burned out -- depths of SL-27 where they discovered over 100 abandoned rooms, including a SIM lab complete with a shackle-laden birthing table. They also came across boxes containing information on the children (including Jarod) exploited by The Pretender Project, and confirmed that Jarod was indeed stolen from his parents while his parents were still alive -- and that he was brought to The Centre by Sydney's brother, Jacob. [Jarod discovers disposable diapers.]
(21) "THE DRAGON HOUSE" (2-part Season Finale): The best episode of the entire season, this one re-joined Jarod with his brother, Kyle, and also gave him his first glimpse of his mother in over 30 years. The scene during which mother and son see each other in front of a sidewalk cafe is both endearing and heart-wrenching... as Centre operatives move in to attempt to kill Jarod's family (including Jarod's sister Emily) and re-capture Jarod. We saw Sydney, for the first time, put his life in direct jeopardy to protect Jarod. He stepped into the street and positioned his own body between a Centre sedan and the taxi cab carrying Jarod's family so that Jarod's family had time to escape. In this episode, Mr. Raines was also returned to the Centre Burn Unit when someone shot at him, but missed and hit his oxygen tank instead. The tank exploded on impact and engulfed Raines in smoke and raw fire. By the end of the episode, Jarod was alone again, and believed that Kyle had been killed by FBI agents. This one is, too, a "Fans' Favorite" episode.
