MUSIC NEWS - Hours... has been a major global commercial success, although it has only fared about the same as the last two albums in the UK and worse in the US. However, this has been more than amply compensated for by top 5 and top 10 success right across Europe which sees the album spending its third week on the overall European Top 10, and CNN's Worldbeat Top 20. The NME reported last week that already Hours is Bowie's most commercially successful album in over a decade. One unofficial estimate puts total worldwide sales to date at 1.5 million copies already, and as you'll see from Dara's chartwatch later, it ain't over yet. - Catalan web site teleline.terra.es/personal/mosquit/music/mus64.htm for Radio D.O.S. 84, a program on radio station 105.8FM out of Girona, Catalunya has three Bowie tracks from 'hours...' in Windows Media Player format available for download. Of major interest though is that the third track is called "Trying To Get Into Heaven" which the site claims is an outtake from the 'hours...' sessions given to them by Virgin record executives. It may be included as a B-side on a future single. The track sounds like an 'hours...' era song. Check it out and judge for yourself. - Reeves Gabrels has released his new solo album Ulysses (della notte) via his web site www.ReevesGabrels.com. The album which includes one collaboration with Bowie ("Jewel") will not be available in stores, but instead will be made available online through any CDDB-enabled application such as RealJukebox, WinAmp, and MusicMatch. When you buy the album online, you'll also receive a bonus player that is the equivalent of a virtual album cover with audio playback capability. - Bowie confirmed on BBC radio recently that the next single - in the UK at least - will be Survive. No official release date yet. Also slated for release is a remix of "Under Pressure", with a new video which has already been shown on TOTP 2 in the UK (on their recent Bowie special). __________________________________________ CONCERT NEWS - You may have noticed that Bowie has been playing a number of lowkey club dates and corporate gigs in addition to his recent appearance at NetAid. At several of these, he has referred to them as "rehearsals", which begs the question will there be a proper Hours tour? In public, Bowie is still saying no (he recently told the BBC he has no plans to tour for the next 18 months, but when he does, he'd tour "till I drop"). However, rumours still abound, and one inside source indicates that a tour may be on for "early next year, maybe February/March". All we can really say for sure at this point is watch this space. - Bowie will play a private Kit Kat Klub club gig in New York in a fortnight. The concert will be filmed and recorded and then rebroadcast both over the Internet and by radio stations throughout the US. A full list of the radio stations taking part is forthcoming, but the webcast will be available anywhere in the world via QuickTime 4.0 and Windows Media Player at the Blue Concert Series web site, www.blueconcerts.com. Unfortunately, even if you're in New York, you won't be able to buy a ticket to the Kit Kat Klub show although you may be able to win a ticket from radio station giveaways in other cities. For example, Boston radio station WFNX is offering a chance to win the trip to New York and concert. You can enter at their website and listen online at fnxradio.com/bowie.html. Similarly, Montreal's Chom 97.7 FM (www.chom.com) is running a Kit Kat Klub ticket contest. - If you were unfortunate enough to buy tickets or tour packages through Odyssey's End or The Year 2000 Festival company to the failed Gisborne 2000 concert, the liquidators are now in the process of settling the proceeds of the company. You can register yourself as an unsecured creditor by sending your name, a letter indicating you wish to be listed as an unsecured creditor of The Year 2000 Festival Company to: Pierce Tubbs, Chartered Accountants PO Box 2283 Christchurch New Zealand Email: pierce-tubbs@xtra.co.nz Fax: (03) 366 5525 You can read more on the Teenage Wildlife Gisborne 2000 liquidation page (http://www.teenagewildlife.com/Appearances/Concerts/2000/0101/liquidation.html) __________________________________________ MOVIE NEWS - "Exhuming Mr. Rice" has recently picked up the following awards: Golden Butterfly for Best Film - Isfahan Festival (Iran) Special CIFEJ Jury Prize - Isfahan Festival (awarded by the International Center of Films for Children and Young Adults; Montreal) The Agis Award - Giffoni Festival (Italy; General Association of Entertainment) The Bronze Gryphon - Giffoni Festival (for selection into the "Free to Fly Competition") EXHUMING MR RICE FESTIVAL SCHEDULE 1999 Nov. 14-20 The Golden Elephant India Nov. 21-Dec. 8 Junior Dublin Ireland Nov. 22-Dec. 12 Cinemagic Northern Ireland 2000 Feb. 2-11 Tehran Film Festival Tehran Feb. 9-20 Kinderfest Berlin Feb. 25 – March 5 Fantasporto Portugal - Labyrinth was released in the US on DVD in October. The UK release is expected soon. It includes the 60 minute "Inside the Labyrinth" documentary. __________________________________________ ART NEWS - Teenage Wildlife reports that the Sensation exhibit from Charles Saatchi's British contemporary art collection which caused a ruckus earlier this month is still making headlines. This time it's about the nature of the exhibit's funding at the public Brooklyn Musem. An New York Times Arts section article by David Barstow examined some of the controversy. Of particular interest is a claim that Bowie pledged $75,000 to help fund the show after other philanthropists refused to put up money which they saw as putting "money into Saatchi's pocket". Bowie also provided the voice-over for the audio tour free of charge and in return Ultrastar Internet Services (the formal company behind BowieNet) was given the rights to put the Sensation exhibit on the Internet. Barstow writes that Bowie's business manager Bill Zysblat (and co-founder of Ultrastar) says although they paid nothing for the right to put the exhibit on Bowie's Internet site, Ultrastar spent about $70,000 on the technical side. The extra cost didn't go unrewarded though; Zysblat says that the average number of visitors to BowieNet increased 500% in the three weeks after Sensation opened. (Actual numbers given are 2 million "visitors" per month on average, and 7.5 million in the three weeks after Sensation opened.) Brooklyn Museum director Arnold Lehman Lehman said that the museum recently received Bowie's donation, but declined to reveal the amount. He emphasized that there was no connection between the donation and the decision to give Ultrastar the rights to Sensation. The blurring of the lines between corporate sponsorship and corporate philanthropy has some museum experts concerned however that public museums are losing their implied trust to display art purely on the basis of artistic merit. Other unusual financial dealings behind the show such as an attempt by the museum to conceal sponsorship by the collection's owner Charles Saatchi brought harsh criticism from academics. Director of the graduate program in museum studies at George Washington University, Ms. Marie Malaro is quoted in the article as saying "If I was on that board, I'd either resign or have the heads of all the staff who are involved." - The National Portrait Gallery in London is currently showing its Faces of the Century exhibition. Bowie was asked to pick ten faces for the exhibit. Three of them are Samuel Beckett, Sid Vicious and Peter Mandelson. - Bowie is featured in an upcoming exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art entitled 'Rock Style' which features costumes of rock stars. The exhibit opens at the Met on December 6th and runs through March 19, 2000. It then travels to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland opening May 12th through September 10, 2000. After that, it goes to the Barbican Centre in London from October 4 through December 10, 2000. Bowie has seven of his costumes on display including The Clown from 'Ashes to Ashes' video; 'The Thin White Duke" costume and the Union Jack Jacket from 'Earthling' as well as three from 'Ziggy Stardust' __________________________________________ NET NEWS - In what is becoming a depressingly familiar trend, another prominent top notch Bowie fan site is shutting its doors, again citing Bowienet as a reason. This time it's Ramoana's site, which provided a refreshingly offbeat and independent take of all things Bowie. Check out http://www.angelfire.com/fl/ramoana/final.html for a full explanation from Ramoana herself. Sorry to see you go Ramoana, we'll miss your sense of humour. - BowieNet Europe officially launched their German-language version on October 17 with a free cybercast of Bowie's Vienna, Austria concert. - Judging from a report at Teenage Wildlife, the latest phase of "Branding Bowie" continues apace, with online bank USABancShares.com teaming up with BowieNet to present you with BowieBanc.com. The new venture promises personalized Bowie checks and MasterMoney/ATM card for your account, and in a special limited time offer will also give you twelve months of free premium access to BowieNet so long as you maintain a $250 average minimum monthly balance. You must also be at least 18 years of age and a US resident to open an account. - One of the coolest thing about the Web is how it allows you to read the thoughts and exploits of people who you wouldn't otherwise here from. You can follow Bowie on the road through the eyes of piano diety, Mike Garson (http://www.nowmusic.net/), new musical director (the funny little fellow in the hat) Mark Plati (http://www.markplati.com/), and the two backing singers, sultry Holly Palmer (http://www.oocities.org/SunsetStrip/Palms/6394/) and cheeky Emm Gryner (http://www.emmgryner.com/1menu.htm). __________________________________________ CHART NEWS (from Dara's Chartwatch, which can be seen in all its glory every week or so at Teenage Wildlife and Bassman's) HOURS... This week's performance in the UK is undoubtedly helped by an excellent David Bowie Top Of The Pops 2 special, shown on Wednesday and repeated on Saturday, which broke free of the usual TOTP2 format of archive material only by broadcasting three tracks from Hours. The Saturday repeat should also help Hours on the chart next week, while two further UK TV slots on Tuesday on channel 4 and VH1 (which premieres the Storytellers as part of its David Bowie day) should also prove useful. Nevertheless, a second single is needed very soon in the UK (actually, I can't understand why it hasn't been released already). Particularly worth noting in Europe is the "Wetten Dass effect". Wetten Dass is a German TV show broadcast throughout the German-speaking world and claiming an average viewership of 18 million people. In the week after Bowie appeared on it in 1997, Earthling rose on the charts in Austria, Switzerland and Germany, and this time the effect on Hours... was even more dramatic, with the album climbing six to #6 in Germany, three to #5 in Austria and seventeen to #18 in Switzerland. It slips back in Germany and Austria this week but remains high on the charts there. Elswehere, in Portugal where the single has suddenly sprung to life, the album climbs to new heights this week. On the overall Euro chart, the album slips two to #8 in its third week on the top 10, while in its third week on CNN's Worldbeat chart, it drops four to #11. The album received a belated release in New Zealand, where it debuts at #21, six places below the debut position Earthling managed. On the Internet voting charts, it rises ten to #20. Pointless to go into it in detail here when there's a resource as exhaustive as Teenage Wildlife which has everything you could possibly want to know on it all (particularly worth checking out is an outstanding review of the Dublin gig by leading Bowie writer Dara O'Kearney at http://www.teenagewildlife.com/Appearances/Concerts/1999/1010/1094/xinfo/reviews/okearney_dara.html). - Bowie provided a rousing finale to the WB Radio Music Awards with first Thursday's Child and then Rebel Rebel to close out the night. Earlier, Bowie was presented with a Legend award by none other than Garth Brooks, who appeared genuinely impressed to be given that honour (a tip of the cowboy hat even). - Next Tuesday, November 9, VH-1 in the UK will have the first showing of Storytellers in Europe as part of a David Bowie Day. They'll also show some older performances such as Live At The Beat Club. Also on Tuesday, Channel 4 in the UK is airing a new show called Right About Now which will see Bowie answering videotaped questions from fans as one of their segments. - Eidos Interactive is running a special t-shirt offer for those who buy The Nomad Soul (the new Windows 95/98 computer game which features Bowie and Gabrels' music along with their and Iman's animated characters). There are also "easy listening" versions of: The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell We All Go Through The Dreamers Thursday's Thing Teenage Wildlife reports that a fast Pentium II with a good 3D graphics card is recommended to play the game from those who have tried it already. - Bowie was awarded the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres medal, the highest cultural distinction award in France, by the French minister of culture Catherine Trautman in a press conference held at the Pavillon Gabriel in October. The award is seldom awarded to non-French citizens. - Under Pressure was remixed and a new video put together to promote a new Queen Greatest Hits album. The video premiered on a recent Bowie TOTP 2 special (which also included old archive Bowie material and three tracks from Hours). - Teenage Wildlife reports that in the process of officially declining to appear at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert a couple of weeks ago, Bowie made some comments to Norwegian media regarding his future plans. He confirmed that he would be concentrating on finishing the Ziggy Stardust theatre production which he hopes to premiere in New York next year, along with "another piece of work". In addition, he reaffirmed that he won't be touring for another 18 months, but that when he does, he will "tour until I drop". - Hedwig and the Angry Inch, the Off Broadway musical about an East German transvestite would-be rock star officially opened on Halloween night at the Henry Fonda theatre in Hollywood. Bowie took on the role of co-producer in the Los Angeles production, and personally invested $150,000. - Saxophonist Simon Haram's new album Alone... includes a cover of Bowie's Warszawa (recently named by Bowie as his own personal favourite of all the stuff he's recorded in an interview with Irish magazine Hot Press printed in their latest edition, which also has Bowie on the cover). - BowieWonderWorld reports that Bowie will appear this month on Friday 19th November on UK ARENA TVC station "Arena People: A Chat With David Bowie" transmitted at 12.20am, and the postponed appearance on the JOOLS HOLLAND SHOW for BBC2 Television has now been rescheduled for 29th November 1999. - Irish TV Channel RTE2 on a programme called "No Disco" will be airing an interview with Bowie that was recorded backstage at the HQ Club Dublin within the next few weeks.
