Free part thirty one

**
You are the one who makes me happy
When everything else turns to grey.
Yours is the voice that wakes my mornings
Sends me out in to the day.

You are the crowd that sits quiet
Listening to me
And all the mad sense I made
You are one of the few things worth remembering
And since its all true
How could anyone mean more to me than you.

Sorry if sometimes I look past you.
There's no one beyond your eyes
Inside my head the wheels are turning
Hey, sometimes I'm not so wise

You are my heart and my soul
My inspiration
Just like the old love song goes.
You are one of the few things worth remembering
And since its all true
How could anyone mean more to me than you.

"Why can't you tell me what's wrong?" Liz asked quietly.

Lucky shifted. His eyes darted around the room. He avoided Liz's completely. "I - I don't know what you're talking about."

Liz sighed. "You do too."

Lucky edged away from her. "No," he protested weakly.

"That's what I thought," Liz said, looking down. Her instincts told her to cut and run, but she remained in a fixed position in the center of Lucky's room. She stared at her feet, pretending interest.

Lucky reached out, but his hand stopped before he touched her.

"Elizabeth," he whispered hoarsely. She looked up, tears still glittering in her eyes.

"Lucky," she croaked right back.

Lucky touched her face tenderly. He sucked in a deep breath. "Baby, I-"

Liz's brain shut down when he called her that. Her heart was fluttering wildly, partly because of his close proximity, partly because of the fact that he just *was*. Lucky was saying something, something that Liz could tell was not the whole truth, judging by his eyes. She grew tired of pretending and closed in on him. His eyes widened when she kissed his chin. She drew away, and turned her back on him, walking from his room and into the hall.

"Wait!" Lucky called out, forcing himself into action. He jogged into the hall after Liz. She'd stopped, but hadn't turned around. Lucky grasped her shoulders and turned her to face him. "This isn't over!"

"It never is, right?" Liz said, resignedly. She tried to step out of Lucky's grasp. He simply held her tighter.

"Elizabeth, baby-"

"Stop calling me that!" The words slipped from her mouth, her anger overtaking her brain, before she could stop them. Instantly she regretted them, wished she could take them back.

Lucky looked as if she'd slapped him. He dropped his eyes, his hold on Liz gradually loosening. Liz swallowed, taking a small step back.

"Lucky, I'm sorry, I didn't mean that-"

He stepped away from her and turned to his room, closing the door softly.

"Lucky..." Liz heard him slam something against the wall.

"Fine!" she said loudly to the door. "That's just fine!" her voice cracked. Lucky's door opened, Lucky appearing in the doorframe. He held one hand away from him body gingerly.

"Don't push me, Elizabeth," Lucky gruffed. Liz's eyes flashed.

"Why not? You'd never hurt me, I *know* that. At least not physically." Liz glared at him, turned and stomped into the living room. She talked the whole way. "But, no... You won't tell me what's up with you, then you get angry because of one little slip of my tongue when I can't get any information out of you, and now you just plain won't talk to me! I never know what to expect with you, Lucky!" Her tirade ended more quickly that it had begun.

Lucky had followed her into the room, seething the whole way. Now he rounded Liz, facing her, his eyes blazing fire. Liz brought her chin up defiantly.

"You are so infuriating!" Lucky hissed, leaning into Liz's personal space.

"Well, you're the most irritating person I know!" Liz snapped. Her eyes shrunk to slits. Lucky opened his mouth to comment. Liz threw her arms up in surrender. "I don't want to hear it!"

Lucky caught her arm and turned her to face him. She opened her mouth to protest, but he covered it with his own.

The kiss was furious, short and intensely sweet.

Lucky backed away rapidly, passing a hand over his face.

"Are you okay?" he asked quietly, not meeting Liz's eyes.

"No," she answered truthfully, staring at him. Lucky looked up, worry in his face.

"I'm sorry." His voice betrayed his self-recrimination.

"It's not *that*!" Liz burst out, throwing her hands up. She made a sound of impatience and walked in a complete circle around Lucky. "I *hate* fighting with you. I hate arguing with you and not being able to get through to you, and I *hate* that you won't listen to me!!"

Liz paced in front of Lucky, before he reached out and tugged her to him. She fell into his arms, tears falling from her eyes. She wept into him, then reached up and kissed him full on the mouth. He clung to her, she clutched his shoulders. This kiss was almost desperate, long and aching.

"You have to stop doing this to me," Liz groaned, pulling back. She wiped at her nose and face.

"I know," Lucky said, "I know. I'm sorry."

Liz sighed. "I'm not. We need to air all this out."

"Do you want to talk about it?"

"I thought we did that already?"

"No, I mean, talk about my...feelings."

Liz kept herself from gasping aloud. "Of course," she replied quickly. Lucky sat on the couch, Liz following. He placed a kiss on her forehead.

"First and foremost, I still love you. Nothing could make me stop, least of all a little fuss we've had."

Liz smiled to herself, already liking the turn this was taking. Lucky's next words choked her.

"I don't want to lose you."
