Free part forty three
**
Late at night when all the world is sleeping
I stay up late and think of you and I wish on a star
That somewhere you are thinking of me too
'Cause I'm dreaming of you tonight
'Til tomorrow I'll be holding you tight
And there's nowhere in the world I'd rather be
Than here in my room dreaming about you and me
Wonder if you ever see me and I wonder if you
Know I'm there (Am I there)
If you looked in my eyes would you see what's inside
Would you even care
I just wanna hold you close but so far
All I have are dreams of you
So I wait for the day and the courage to say
How much I love you
I'll dreaming of you tonight
'Til tomorrow I'll be holding you tight
And there's nowhere in the world I'd rather be
Than here in my room dreaming about you and me
(BRIDGE)
Ahh-Ahh
I can't stop dreaming of you
I can't stop dreaming
I can't stop dreaming of you
Late at night when all the world is sleeping
I stay up and think of you
And I still can't believe that
You came up to me and said
I love you
I love you too
I'll be dreaming with you tonight
'Til tomorrow and for all of my life
And there's nowhere in the world l'd rather be
Than here in my room dreaming with you endlessly
(CHORUS OUT)
(Selena: "Dreaming of You")

The digital clock at the bedside read 3:07 when Liz awoke from her fitful sleep. A dull throbbing in her ankle notified her that she needed more painkillers. Liz groaned internally. She knew she'd forgotten something. The pills that the doctor had left were safely on the kitchen counter.
Liz's first instinct was to roll over and nudge Lucky until he awoke. She crushed the idea immediately and sat up. Her gaze went naturally to Lucky, who was snoring softly. Liz's face softened. She lightly touched his forehead, unable to help herself. He must've been even more tired than he'd expressed earlier, because usually he would be awoke by now.
Liz sighed softly. She edged off the side of the bed, gently untangling herself from Lucky's arm. She stood up and stock still for a moment, getting her balance on her one good foot.
She hobbled to the doorway and slowly opened the door, taking one last glance at Lucky's sleeping form. Liz went on to the kitchen slowly. She stopped often, leaning frequently on the wall for support. Finally she reached her destination.
The little brown bottle of pills sat cheerily across the tiled floor, on the counter. A glass that Liz had used earlier was next to them, half full of water.
Liz made her way over to the medicine and picked the bottle up.
She was halfway back across the kitchen when she decided to rest awhile. She dropped into one of the chairs at the table.

"Elizabeth?"
The familiar voice pulled her from her sleep. Liz raised her bleary eyes to the kitchen doorway, where a frazzled looking Lucky was shifting from foot to foot. His t-shirt and pajama bottoms made a cute picture, completed by his rumpled hair.
"Elizabeth?" he asked again. He approached from an angle, almost as if he didn't know what to do. "Baby, are you okay? How to you get in here?"
Liz nodded first, rising to her foot. She swayed and clutched the tabletop for support. Lucky took a step closer. "I'm- I'm fine," Liz murmured sleepily. "I came in for more medicine...my foot."
"Oh." Lucky frowned. "When I woke up and you weren't there..."
Liz rolled her shoulders and looked around for a clock.
"I woke up -- before, and I needed -- my foot was aching and I didn't want to wake you..." she trailed off, finding a clock above the fridge. 5:19. "I must've fallen asleep," she concurred, her gaze returning to the still worried Lucky.
"You should've woken me up," Lucky scolded gently, taking her arm. "At first I thought-" he cut himself off, and tried to turn Liz to the door.
"Thought what?" she asked sweetly, refusing to budge.
"I thought I'd scared you off, after today. You know all you have to do is say the word and Dodge is miles away, right?" Lucky had steered her back into the hall by now. Liz was smiling bemusedly. She allowed herself to be returned to bed, and tucked under the covers.
Lucky scooted onto his side of the bed, although he did remain on top of the covers. He sent Liz a questioning look, asking if his presence was a bother to her. She automatically shook her head "no".
He watched her close her eyes and even out her breathing, knowing that she was pretending for him, and wondering why. He'd woken earlier, feeling the emptiness of the bed deep inside. Mentally he'd freaked. Worry for Elizabeth had clouded his mind, his heart had begun racing. Luckily the intelligent side of him had won out quickly, and he'd gone on a search for her. Finding her in the kitchen was a moment of such intense relief for him, he'd nearly cried. He'd watched her for a long while before actually waking her, his eyes scanning every inch of her face, every tear-track, every twitch of her muscles in her sleep. He'd wanted to reach out to her and just scoop her into his arms, but once again his logical side had won out. It was never a good idea to surprise a sleeping woman. Especially not Elizabeth, especially not after what happened to her. And the distance that he'd been feeling all evening, radiating from her, didn't help matters much. So he'd called out her name, effectively waking her.
Now her sleeping act was doing a number on his psyche. What was keeping her from him? What was blocking the closeness that they'd felt this afternoon, on the beach and in the rain? It was like their link had been damaged.
Lucky ran over the events of the day in his head. He couldn't think of a thing he'd done wrong. It's been perfect.
Maybe that's the problem. It was too perfect to last.
