Buffy the Vampire Slayer Charisma Carpenter Interview

September 23, 1998

APOLLO: First off, do you like the way that your character has evolved over the course of the show? She seems much less superficial now, and much kinder.

CHARISMA: Actually, I just had this conversation with the producers recently. I do, and I think because it's more screen time.

A: Now that Cordelia is hanging out with the so-called "Scooby Gang," has she lost popularity?

C: Probably among the people that she used to value opinions of, but not any more. I think she's in love with Xander and this is her person of choice at the moment.

A: If Xander gets some competition for Cordelia's affections next season, which guest actor would you like to see play the part?

C: John Cusack.

A: That was quick.

C: Or Damien Hardy.

A: Should we be expecting a more hard-nosed Cordelia in Season Three?

C: I think, yes. Not right away, though.

A: If you were able to write an episode, what would it be like?

C: I'm so not a writer. Well, it would be very Cordie friendly. There would be a lot of her, and I think more angst on her end so we could see her more vulnerable and I could exercise that visibility. And then, for fans and people that watch to be able to see that kind of range that I don't think I've been able to exercise.

A: How do you manage to keep your sanity during the long days of filming?

C: My animals, my friends, and staying physically active I guess. You know, doing fun stuff.

A: Okay, who would you like to see guest star on the show?

C: I think everybody wants John Cusack on the show, and I was the first to start that. He was in "Details," right around the time "Gross Pointe Blank" came out and I was reading this interview, and we were talking about... I don't know, Joss walked by. And he's asked: "What are you reading about?" And I replied: "John Cusack." "OH, we like him." And I said: "Well, if I called him up and asked him; if I get him on the show I was thinking, what could I ask Joss for that I would want more than anything on earth." He says: "Then you get him on the show," meaning that I get to be his love interest. The next thing I know, Willow's line, in an episode in the future, is, they were playing anywhere else but here, and she's says: "If I was anywhere else but here," and I don't know what episode it was, "I'd want to be in," I think she said, "Italy or France sort of at a cafe with John Cusack." I was so bummed. Great, because now Joss says if I get him on the show then it looks like Willow will get him. But, really, we all are crazy about John Cusack. We think he's a huge talent. And Damien Hardy.

A: Okay. I know during the season you have long days. How do you like to spend your free time?

C: What free time? I guess, just chilling. I'm not a big club-goer. You wouldn't see me there. I like to go to lunch with my friends. I like to take my dogs to the dog park. I like to go, you know, to indoor rock-climbing places. I like to try yoga, ride bikes, roller-blade, and shop. You know, fun stuff. When I have time.

A: If there was one thing that you could change in the character you play, what would it be?

C: I think I would just want there to be more of her and more, like... more drama.

A: If your life were a high school yearbook page, you'd be voted most likely to what?

C: For myself? Most likely..., in high school I wasn't voted any of those things, most likely to trip over their own feet, I don't know.

A: In your own words, please describe your character and elaborate on what you feel are her flaws and virtues.

C: Cordelia, her virtues are that she's open-minded; she speaks her mind. You know, you always know where you stand. Great dresser. And then I think her flaws are... Her flaw is that she tends to offend people, she's not very tactful.

A: Who was your inspiration through all the years of acting?

C: Probably my acting teacher, and Ashley Judd.

A: If you weren't an actor right now, what do you think you'd be doing?

C: I'd either be a professional athlete or a teacher.

A: What are some goals that you would like to accomplish and are still trying to accomplish?

C: To read more.

A: And our last question here. What is the most embarrassing moment that you've had while on the set of "Buffy?"

C: Kissing Xander for the first time on "What's My Line, Part II." When we pulled back there was this big string of saliva between us. That was pretty embarrassing and they got it on film. So it's going to be used to torture us, I'm sure, over and over and over again. And, actually, I think it's used by The WB Network to promote our show, because they do these small little bios to advertise. There's a clip in there of that and it's kind of funny. So I think for people that watch the show or tune in between... before and after the show, there's usually advertisements that go on for the show and they'll show that. They can see what I'm talking about.
