Night.
Adam and Liza's car. Liza has just told Adam that she had originally asked Tad to father her child.
Liza: I’m sorry, Adam.
Adam: Liza, I’m no saint. Let me ask you something. Would you have done it if you weren’t so hurt or angry?
Liza: No.
Adam: Would you have done it if you thought there was any chance for you and me?
Liza: No.
Adam: What would you have done?
Liza: I would have come to you and asked for a second chance.
Adam: And if I had said no? If I were so angry and hurt that I wouldn’t listen?
Liza: I don’t know. I would have waited, I think. Why?
Adam: What if there was no time to wait? What if I was in the process of doing something that would alter my life so completely that I could never go back and make things right between us?
Liza: What do you mean?
There's another red light, and Adam stops the car again and turns to Liza.
Adam: Liza, do you know that I love you?
Liza: Yes. I love you too.
Adam: More than my own life.
Liza: Me too.
Adam: If there’s anyone who can understand or forgive you, it’s me. No matter what you do.
It’s become dark out, but even in the darkness Adam can see Liza wiping away her tears again.
Liza: I said that to you, and look how I threw it away.
Adam: You didn’t throw it away, you let it keep for a while. That’s why we are soulmates. Because in our hearts, we both know that this is a once in a lifetime, all-encompassing gift from the gods.
Liza: Oh, Adam. Thank God we still have that.
Adam: Yes.
The light changes colors, and Adam drives forward, while steeling his resolve.
Adam: Liza, I have to tell you something.
Liza: Oh, Adam. Not again.
Adam: I do. There’s something you need to know, something much more of a betrayal than anything you can imagine.
Liza: Anything, I don’t care -- as long as you can promise me we’ll be together always.
Adam: That’s what I want, but I love you enough to give you the freedom to choose. You understand?
Liza: There’s no choice.
Adam: There’s always a choice. Equal and willing partners.
Liza: Equal and willing partners.
Adam: So you have to know. When I found out you were going to have another man’s child, I was devastated. I knew we belonged together, and I knew I had hurt you enough to put our chances in jeopardy while you went through your artificial insemination.
Liza: But you came to accept it.
Adam: I accepted it because...because...
Liza: It doesn’t matter. Tell me.
Adam: Stepping up and risking it all.
Liza: There’s no risk. You’re safe with me.
Adam: All right.
They drive for just a few moments in silence. They come to an intersection. The light is red, and they stop.
Adam: We need to pull over after this intersection.
Liza: Okay.
The light turns green.
Adam accelerates the car. From out of the darkness, another car careens into the intersection. Before there is any time to act, Liza and Adam’s car is hit hard on the driver’s side. There are sounds of squealing tires, metal crashing against metal and breaking glass. And then there’s a terrifying silence, which is soon broken by the sound of the horn from Adam and Liza’s car.
