Tarnished Armor
Part 25

Pine Valley Hospital Reception area.

Erica is at the reception desk speaking with the receptionist.

Receptionist: Dr. Hayward is in surgery right now.

Erica: Oh. That’s odd. He asked me to meet him here.

Receptionist: It’s an emergency surgery, Ms. Kane.

Erica: Oh. Well, that makes sense.

Jake comes over to the reception desk.

Jake: Hello, Erica.

Erica: Oh. Hello, Jake.

Jake turns to the receptionist.

Jake: Cecilia, I’m headed home. You can page me on my beeper if I’m needed.

Jake turns to go.

Erica: Jake!

Jake turns back.

Jake: Yes?

Erica: How’s Colby? I heard there was an accident, and I also heard she was okay, but I’d like to hear it from her father.

Jake: If fatherhood counts for anything these days, I’d say Colby is perfect.

Erica: Well, I must say, that’s a strange way of putting things. Why wouldn’t fatherhood count?

Jake: Well, I really shouldn’t be talking about this.

Erica: Oh, Jake, you can trust me. I love that little girl. And I’ve always considered you the perfect father.

Jake: Thank you. That means a lot to me. Especially now.

Erica: Why now?

Jake: Oh, things are getting dicey at Chandler Mansion.

Erica: What do you mean?

Jake: Oh, there’ve been some visitation problems, and custody is getting confused. Erica, I’m sorry. I don’t want to be talking about this, and I really should be getting home.

Erica: Of course. Sorry to keep you.

Jake leaves, and Erica turns back to the receptionist.

Erica: Where can I find Adam Chandler?

The receptionist checks her computer.

       ******

The hallway outside of Adam’s hospital room.

Liza is sleeping in a chair in the waiting area.

Erica enters the waiting area, notices Liza, and goes over.

Erica considers waking Liza up, but then decides against it.

She enters Adam’s room.

       ******

Adam’s hospital room.

The nurse is adjusting Adam’s sheets.

Erica enters. Adam looks up.

Nurse: May I help you?

Erica: I doubt it.

Adam: Erica?

Adam waves dismissively at the nurse.

Adam: It’s all right. We’ve been married once or twice, depending upon whom you talk to. I suppose that she’s a family member of some sort. Erica, thank you for coming. Aren't you --?

Erica: Hello, Adam. Strange when the shoe is on the other foot, isn’t it?

Adam: I don’t know what you’re talking about. Shouldn’t you be in jail?

Erica: Well, that’s a strange question coming from you.

Adam: How so? Wait. Three months old. So...

Erica: I don’t know, Adam. I mean, part of me is glad to see you alive, and part of me wonders how you manage to stay alive.

Adam: You’re a wonderful welcome wagon, Erica.

Erica: Well, save it. I just wanted to make sure I knew exactly what was going on.

Adam: In regard to?

Erica: The baby. That innocent little life that you seem hell-bent on destroying.

Adam: Liza’s baby? Erica, the Adam Chandler lynch mob meets on Tuesdays at noon in the cafeteria. You’ve obviously taken a wrong turn somewhere. And what did I ever do to you?

Erica: What haven’t you done to me?

Adam: Erica, I just paid a million dollars to get you out of jail. Doesn’t that mean anything anymore? Or has the American dollar fallen again?

Erica: Jail? What do you...? Oh. Oh! Oh, Adam, how clever!

Adam: The American dollar thing was off the top of my head.

Erica: No, no, Adam! I mean the amnesia thing!

Adam: Amnesia? What on earth...?

The nurse interrupts.

Nurse: Miss? Have you been briefed to come in here?

Erica: Briefed! I don’t need to be briefed -- I wrote the book on Adam Chandler.

Nurse: Miss, I’m afraid I’ll have to ask you to step outside.

Erica: Well, if I were you I would be afraid.

Nurse: Miss, if you don’t step outside, I’ll have to call security.

Erica: Oh, who cares?

The nurse takes a step towards Erica.

Erica: Please don’t come any closer. It frightens me to think that your fashion sense is contagious. Adam, I’ll be back.

Adam: Wait!

Erica leaves the room, closely followed by the nurse.

       ******

The hallway outside Adam’s hospital room.

Erica and the nurse step out into the hallway.

Nurse: Really, miss, this is highly irregular.

Erica: Irregular? I have been called many things -- original, unique, dazzling -- but never irregular.

Liza wakes up and looks around.

Liza: Erica? What are you doing here?

Erica: Oh, Liza, you look terrible! And black is such a bad color for you. It brings out the circles under your eyes.

Liza: Well, Erica, fashion and eye circles are not exactly uppermost in my mind right now.

Erica: Well, no. Of course not!

Liza looks at the nurse.

Liza: I can take it from here.

The nurse goes back into Adam’s room.

Liza: Erica, if you’ve come to see Adam, I’m sorry, but he can’t have any visitors right now.

Erica: Well, it’s too late for that, Liza. I’ve just come from his room.

Liza: You what?

Liza stands.

Erica: I just came from inside, and it was incredibly strange. Adam seems to have developed a suspicious case of amnesia.

Liza: Oh God. What did you...what did you tell him?

Erica: Well, nothing. We were just chatting, and surprise, surprise! Adam seems to think I’m in jail for the whole situation with Maddie.

Liza: Oh my God. What did you say to him?

Erica: I said the amnesia thing was terribly clever.

Liza: Damn you, Erica! Adam doesn’t know he has amnesia.

       ******

Adam’s hospital room.

Adam is still in bed.

He looks up at the nurse.

Adam: You there!

Nurse: Me?

Adam: Yes, you in the white. Do you see anyone else in the room? What’s going on? What’s all this about amnesia?

Nurse: I really couldn’t say.

Adam: Couldn’t? Or wouldn’t?

Nurse: Would you like me to call a doctor?

Adam: What I’d like are some explanations.

Nurse: I’m afraid we’ll have to wait for the doctor.

Adam: Who’s in charge around here?

       ******

The hallway outside of Adam’s hospital room.

Erica and Liza are now facing each other.

Erica: I mean, Liza, don’t you find it the least bit suspicious that Adam has suddenly forgotten -- what is it? -- two years?

Liza: Not really, Erica. I find it sad. I find it frustrating. I don’t find it suspicious.

Erica: Oh, you poor thing! Tell me something: what does he know about the baby?

Liza: I don’t really see where that’s any of your concern.

Erica: Does he know about the baby? At all?

Liza: He knows there is a baby.

Erica: A baby. Does he know about Jake?

Liza: Erica, he barely knows what happened last night.

Erica: Well, is someone planning on telling him? I’d be curious to see his reaction.

Liza: You know something, Erica? I’m not in the mood for this. And I’d appreciate you taking your attitude, and your insinuations, and going home or to Enchantment -- you know what? I don’t care where you go. Just go away.

Erica: Well, I can see where I’m not wanted. But Liza? A word of advice. You make it clear to Adam -- as soon as possible -- that Jake is the father of that baby.

       ******

Adam’s hospital room.

Nurse: Well, Dr. Jensen is in charge of the case, but he’s not available right now.

She checks her chart.

Nurse: He’s scheduled back here in an hour.

Adam: Well, I don’t have an hour. I want to talk to someone. Right here. Right now.

       ******

The hallway outside of Adam’s hospital room.

Liza turns away from Erica.

Liza: I don’t need your advice.

Erica: Oh, yes. Yes, you do. You tell him as soon as possible. Because the sooner he understands that, the less chance there will be of that baby being as tortured as the rest of Adam’s children, amnesia or no amnesia. And this is the most convenient time to do it -- before he thinks he has any claim.

Liza: Good-bye, Erica.

Erica throws one last look at Liza, and makes her way down the hall.

Dr. Jensen comes down the hall.

Dr. Jensen: Mrs. Chandler? I’ve been consulting with Dr. Tolan about your husband’s case, and we’d like to meet with you now, if you’re up to it.

Liza: Of course.

Dr. Jensen: Right this way.

Dr. Jensen leads Liza down the hallway.

The nurse comes out into the hallway.

Nurse: Mrs. Chandler?

The nurse looks around, and then goes back inside.
