Tarnished Armor
Part 3

Colby’s nursery.

Adam is just putting Colby back in her crib.

Liza walks in.

Liza: Hello again.

Adam (whispers): Hello.

Liza (whispers): Ah, the aria is over?

Adam (whispers): Well, I’m no fat lady, but I can assure you the latest round is over.

Liza (whispers, pointing to the baby monitor): I heard.

Adam: Oh. Was it an arena performance?

Liza (whispers): What? No. Jake left.

She smiles and then turns away.

Adam (whispers): Liza?

Liza: Yeah.

Adam (in a low voice): Look at me.

Liza turns back to Adam.

They both look at each other for a few moments, and then Liza moves towards Adam. He holds out both of his hands to her.

She goes to grasp his hands in hers, and he pulls them slightly away.

Adam (whispers): I have something different in mind.

Liza: Adam!

Adam (whispers): Sssh! No, not that. Not yet, anyway.

Liza (whispers): Promises, promises.

He puts both of his hands palms up towards her.

Adam (whispers): Let’s try that parlor trick of yours.

Liza pulls away.

Adam (whispers): Turnabout is fair play, Mrs. Chandler. Tonight I am the Human Lie Detector. I'm here to find out what's troubling you -- I suspect it has something to do with a four-letter word -- and I'm not going away until I've found that out.

Liza (whispers): Using my own tricks against me, huh?

Adam: Uh-huh.

Liza (whispers): Well, I have a newsflash for you. Half the time, I’m bluffing. I’m full of it. I’m just guessing that you’re lying.

Adam (whispers): You mean you’re lying about knowing what I’m lying about?

Liza (whispers): I’ve got you wondering now, don’t I?

Adam (whispers): You’ve always got me wondering.

Adam kisses her. One of his hands caresses the small of Liza’s back, and the other pulls her neck towards him. The kiss builds in intensity, and then Liza pulls away.

Liza (whispers): Maybe we should take this to our room.

Adam (whispers): Maybe. But you know that whatever’s troubling you will still be there afterwards for us to face together. As partners. No matter what, you’ll still wake up with me, and I’ll still be concerned.

Liza (whispers): I know. It’s a blessing and a curse.

Adam laughs and Colby stirs.

Liza (whispers): Sssh!

Adam (whispers): Let’s go.

They go to leave, and Liza stops.

Liza (whispers): Oh, no. I left the monitor downstairs. Why don’t you go pick it up and meet me in bed?

Adam (whispers): Nope. I pulled diaper duty. You go get the monitor and meet me in bed.

Liza (whispers): Why do I get the feeling that our entire relationship is one big game of “Gotcha last”?

Adam (whispers): “Gotcha last”? Must be some newfangled game. But I like it. Now go get the monitor.

Liza kisses Adam.

She pulls away and smiles at him. He smiles back.

Liza (whispers): You’re everything I’ll ever need, Adam. Except for one thing.

Adam (whispers): What is it?

Liza (whispers): I need the baby monitor right now, too. Go get the monitor and I’ll meet you in bed.

Adam (whispers): Nice try. Have a nice trip downstairs, and I’ll see you soon.

Adam walks over to Colby’s crib and adjusts her blanket.

Liza (whispers): You big baby.

Adam (whispers): Sore loser.

Liza (whispers): I love you.

Adam (whispers): I love you, too.

Liza leaves to get the baby monitor.
