Time: 00:13 |
Images from the previous episode are added to the recap (a side note to anyone who hasn't seen the original: There were originally no shots from previous episodes during recaps, only a two-line summary). These additions add approximately a minute and a half to the episode. |
Time: 00:26 |
We've got some scene swapping going on. The title card was moved to right after Hitomi is dropped from Escaflowne's hand. It was originally right after you see the reflection of the light in the Mole Man's glasses. |
Time: 01:11 8 Seconds |
When Hitomi pulls out the pendant to ask for directions, the camera pans behind her, showing glowing eyes. |
Time: 01:24 5 Seconds |
The Mole Man grabs Hitomi and pushes her to the ground (yeah, that scene just kinda looks bad ^_^*). |
Time: 02:22 12 Seconds |
When Allen saves Hitomi, she mistakes him for Amano. Included in this cut is a superimposed shot of Amano's face over Allen's. |
Time: 03:36 1 Second |
When Allen hits Van with his sword, Van spits up some, uh, spit(?) before he hits the ground. Yum. |
Time: 03:51 |
Right after Allen looks at the crest on Van's sword, we get another loveley added commercial break. At least this is at a slightly more opportune spot. |
Time: 4:22 3 Seconds |
Two of the Dragonslayers apologize to Dilandau again (and... they're voiced by girls, too?! I thought Dilandau was the only gender bender in this!). |
Time: 04:37 |
Folken asks Dilandau why he burned Fanelia. To emphasize the above point, the burning carnage from the previous episode is momentarily cut to. |
Time: 05:21 |
Dornkirk tells Folken to capture the dragon. While he's saying this, an image of Escaflowne as a dragon is overlayed on the scene. Um, but we're not supposed to know that Escaflowne is this "dragon" until the next episode. |
Time: 05:46 |
Dornkirk says that he did not predict the pillar of light. Again, the aforementioned anomaly is cut to. |
Time: 05:55 |
And, yet another added scene for emphasis! Dornkirk says that something is creating uncertainty in destiny. So that we have no doubt as to what that something is, we cut to a shot of Hitomi with her pendant. |
Time: 06:14 40 Seconds |
Hitomi has a dream that she's back on earth with Amano. Amano says that she passed out while running. Hitomi thinks that everything that happened with Van so far must have just been a very sad dream. Then she wakes up in Allen's fort. Does this mean that they're trying to stay away from the whole Amano thing entirely? This gives her no motivation to go after Allen (since he looks like Amano). |
Time: 07:31 6 Seconds |
Hitomi looks out the window in Allen's fort and realizes that she really never went home. THAT was all just a dream. |
Time: 08:21 4 Seconds |
When Van reappears after waking up, and Hitomi is startled to see him, it originally pans up to Allen, who has a smug look on his face. Now it just cuts straight back to Van and his little pout. |
Time: 09:43 3 Seconds |
I'm not sure precisely what was cut where here, but my two tapes were off by three seconds suddenly. I think they shortened a shot of Allen asking Van to tell him what happened in Fanelia. |
Time: 11:44 4 Seconds |
I was pretty sure they'd either cut or change this line. When Dilandau wonders who Hitomi is, Allen replies, "She's my new lover!" Since this line was cut, Dilandau's reaction to it was, logically, also cut (::silence:: Dilandau: "Huh?! Oh, wait, you didn't say anything...") |
Time: 11:58 3 Seconds |
Hey, did you know Allen kissing Hitomi's cheek lasted 3 more seconds than what they showed? Well, now you do. |
Time: 12:44 10 Seconds |
Hitomi imagines Allen with angel wings, wondering if he's the winged boy who saved her in her dream in the first episode. "What dream?" you ask? Well, they keep cutting the wing stuff! Now Hitomi has even less reason to chase after Allen, since now he doesn't remind her of her crush back home, nor does she suspect that he's the boy in her dream (well, even though they left the line, "Could he be the one?" Could he be the one what? With the wing cuts, that comment now makes no sense). |
Time: 14:17 |
Flashes of destruction are shown when Hitomi sees the Death card. |
Time: 14:19 |
Also in this scene, the tick-tock "Charm" BGM is replaced with... "Epistle"?! "Epistle" should be solely saved for the end of episode 14, where it belongs. That is the only time in the original we should ever hear this cue, as it is a rather important scene. And we're now just randomly throwing it into a typical Vision of Impending Doom(tm)? Oy... |
Time: 15:01 |
In this scene, Hitomi refers to the Mole Man as a "thief". Originally, she called him a "pervert" (since the way he grabbed her in the beginning was kinda suggestive, but they cut that). |
Time: 16:00 |
Second added commercial break. This is right after Van says that he's going to take Escaflowne and head back to Fanelia. |
Time: 16:03 |
This is the first of a long string of strange music changes. In this scene, Van jumps into Escaflowne, and "Dance of Curse" is once again playing for some unexplainable reason. Yes, thank you for playing some Yoko Kanno stuff, but... this music has nothing to do with the scene. |
Time: 16:43 |
Allen tells Van that he'll have to fight him if Van wants to leave the fort. And at this point, they've decided to play "Murder", that missing BGM from the previous episode that should have played while Van looked out over the burning carnage. Uh, interesting choice.... |
Time: 16:54 |
Van accepts Allen's threat. At this point, the ever-loved piece of BGM, "Ask the Owl" should have played. It's gone. It's not here. They cut it. Let us mourn. No, scratch that. Let me scream. AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!! Sound clip from the original scene, with original BGM playing |
Time: 17:32 |
When Van draws his sword (one of the very few pieces of stock footage in Escaflowne), the music once again changes. Now it's the light percussion interlude in the "Vision of Escaflowne" theme. |
Time: 17:56 |
For the remainder of the battle, the BGM that plays is... "Epistle"?! They're throwing that cue in AGAIN?! First of all, it completely changes the mood of the battle. Now the mood is more like the end of episode 14 (if you don't know what I'm talking about, I won't spoil you. If you do, then you know what I mean). This battle really shouldn't be taken very seriously, which is why "Ask the Owl" should have been left in. It's just Van trying to prove something, and failing miserably. |
Time: 18:34 |
When Allen says that Balgus is one of the four greatest swordsmen, a shot of Balgus is cut to, in case we forgot who he was. |
Time: 19:41 3 Seconds |
When Allen wonders when Van had the chance to hit him, the shot of his face was originally considerably longer. |
Time: 19:50 |
Hitomi has a Vision of Impending Doom(tm) of the fort burning. Okay, HERE'S where they're supposed to play "Murder". They played it a few minutes ago, so they have the track available, right? Eh, guess not. It's not here. |
Note |
And in case you're new to the show and thought that the ending of this episode was kinda sudden and rushed, well, welcome to Escaflowne. The episode ended right where it was supposed to. Escaflowne is notorious for crazy cliffhangers, and to achieve them, a short, unexplainable scene is sometimes added right at the end. The pinnacle of the cliffhangers is, in my opinion, the aforementioned episode 14. I hope they leave that intact, even though it's pretty violent. |
Predictions for Episode 4
-They're gonna do SOMETHING with Van yanking away Hitomi's covers while she's sick in bed, exposing her bare legs.
-I'm already cheering because the episode preview included Dilandau yelling "Burn! Burn!" At least I know that's intact.
-Allen's flashback to his family... uh, who knows what they'll do with that. Depending on how they handle it, it will reveal what their plans are for a certain "other" questionable character.
