Occupational Hierarchy of the Acme Detective Agency

Central Chief
The Central Chief is Chief of the entire Agency. His or her job is to oversee the general functioning of Acme and settle any disputes between Divisions. For special cases that require the work of the entire Agency, the Central Chief directs the case and calls it into action, but usually each Division works independently of the Central Chief.

Division Chief
A Division Chief heads his or her Division, and is directly responsible for its organization and functions. Though none except the Chief of Passangue participate directly in their detectives' field work, they do keep in touch a great deal with the Ambassadors and Full-Time Detectives.

Ambassador
An Ambassador keeps in touch with both the Division Chief and all other detectives in his or her Division, and reports all activity, events, and situations to affected nations. The Ambassadors do limited field work; they do not conduct actual investigations, but check in with those under them and compare their notes. Each Division may have as many as ten Ambassadors or as few as one at any given time. Ambassadors are the busiest, most well-informed, and most up-to-date people at Acme.

Full-Time Detective
Full-Time Detectives conduct extensive field work and usually head all but the biggest investigations. They travel constantly all around the world and for this reason must speak several languages or have a partner who does. (No detective ranked lower than an Ambassador works alone.) They usually live in or around San Francisco and can be called in at all hours of the day. Full-Time Detectives have the most general knowledge; they are usually all-around agents who can handle almost anything, but some are specialized.

Part-Time/Resident Detective
Resident Detectives usually only investigate cases that take place in their home country, though there are some exceptions. They head these investigations but work with other Full-Time Detectives if they need to follow a case out of the country. They are often specialized experts on their particular region.

Consultant
A Consultant is a detective who is only called in when a request is made for information. Consultants tend to be experts in a certain area and sometimes hold a second job in another Division. Most Crimelab detectives are Consultants.

Trainee
A trainee is someone who has graduated from the Training Academy but has not completed his or her year of training to achieve full detective rank. Trainees are frequently brought along on cases for on-the-job training.
