THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS
AND THE GUARDIANS OF THE UNIVERSE
The Green Lantern Corps grew out of the revised origin for Green Lantern during the 1950s/60s revamp of the Golden Age heroes. They started as a back drop for Hal Jordan as Green Lantern and the mysterous Guardians were originally just window dressing (they actually made their first appearance in a Captain Comet story a few years previously). The Corps survived until the 1980s when it was slowly cut down to a handful of Green Lanterns on Earth, this was then cut down to the three human Green Lanterns. The Corps was revived with the start of GREEN LANTERN (third series) and a new backstory by novelist Larry Niven and Gerard Jones helped recapture something of the magesty of the Corps. Unfortunately DC decided that Green Lantern was to be the next hero that they would "break". They had already replaced Superman and Batman with temporary replacements and decided to try a different theme with Green Lantern. They would replace the entire Corps with a single new Green Lantern and turn Hal Jordan into Parallax. The story was written by Ron Marz and drew considerable fire from long time fans. To his credit Marz made the final Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner) a likeable and high selling character. During his run on the title Marz was made use of parts of the Green Lantern history. A side effect of the fall of the Corps is that the former GLs are now something of an easy target for a editor with a bloodlust.
