William Christopher Judson - 1792

William Christopher Judson was a son of Robert and Ann (Clark) Judson. He immigrated to the New England Colonies from his native England. He was a Sergeant in the British Army at the close of the American Revolution, 1776-1783. As a United Empire Loyalist, he was forced to leave his adopted country. He came to Prince Edward Island and spent some time at the old fort at Frenchfort. His name appears on the April, 1786 list of "Loyalist and Disbanded Soldiers" as one being given a grant of land in Lot 65. It is not known if he lived on the land, but by 1792 he had moved with his family to Squaw Bay where he bought one-hundred-and fifty acres. He was a farmer and like other pioneers he seems to have been engaged in the coastal trade, for in 1815 we find he was the owner of a schooner of 18 tons. She was called the Mary Ann and her master was his only son William Christopher Jr. William Christopher Sr. died in 1833.

As well as being a seaman and a farmer, William Jr. made straight arm chairs and padded them for all the members of his family. His grand-daughter, Mrs. D.A. MacLennan, now ninety-years old (circa 1963), still has one of these chairs. He did not use tobacco, but all his sisters smoked clay pipes.

William Jr. was born in 1789 in the old fort at Frenchfort, and had all his teeth but one when he died in 1880 at the age of ninety-one.

William's wife, Bridget Ann Acorn, could take the fleece of a sheep, card, spin, weave and tailor it into pants for her husband and sons. William and Bridget Ann's son William married Elizabeth Wood. He was killed in a threshing machine accident in the autumn of 1851, the year before his son, and only child, William Wellington was born.

Additional Surnames Mentioned

James Gray was a veterinarian in his own right and was sent for when the neighbours had a sick animal. He also did his own cobbling. He had his own last and made boots for his nine children.

About 1894, George R. who was a draughtsman and carpenter built a house south of the road. Later he moved it north of the road where it burned.

George MacLennan built another house on the same foundation, the same year and lives there now. (1963)

In 1897 Jacob built a house where the original Judson house stood. George R. was the builder. Bruce Judson lives there now.

In 1901 James Henry built a new house on the site of the old house. John Jones, an uncle of James Henry was the carpenter. Fred Pound is the present resident owner.

Several men of the present generation are members of the Ross Credit Union which was formed about 1940, by the Rev. D.K. Ross, then minister of Pownal United Church.
