Notes:

Thomas called "Bell the Cat." Thomas in 1482 gave deed to Mangerton Castle to David Scott (See pp.111-112) surrendered absolutely and forever his lands of Mangerton, lying within the Lordship of Liddesdale, into the hands of the earl of Angus, to whom the house was known of old, in favor of David Scott of Branxhelme. A few days later 11/12/1482, on account of service in many ways rendered, David Scott received from the Earl a charter of the lands of Mangerton which had belonged to Thomas Armstrong, hereditably, and which the said Thomas had, neither by force nor fear but his own free will, resigned.

The Armstrongs retained or recovered their possessions and throughout the sixteenth century, their chiefs resided at Mangerton although the Scotts of Buccleuch may not have relinquished their title. In the Tax List of 1541 mangerton is named as belonging to the Armstrongs, but from this time on there is little doubt but that the Armstrongs determined to consider themselves English, even though they dwelt upon the Scottish side of the Border. Thomas mentioned in the deed of resignation, is represented upon the Gillside Stone as the 5th Laird of Mangerton and by the monogram composed of the letters T.A.
