The Casinos

Le Casino (free or paid entrance)

Probably the single most well-known casino in the world is this building from the 19th century that saved the poor principality from bankruptcy, as it soon became famous for it's mighty exteriour and luxuruous interiour. For budget travellers it isn't that great, since you are only allowed to loose your money in a sideroom for free. In this room you get the feeling that this is something made just to keep the masses away from the exclusive companies of further inside. Do you want to see the reel stuff, expext to pay 50FF or 100FF - but if you can afford it's worth the money. The atmosphere is VERY sophisticated. Le Casino is a must since the folk's back home expect you to tell them that you've been there - and it's fun to walk up the stairs in nice clothes after you've passed the Ferraris and Rolls Royces parked outside. Maybe the other tourists think you have arrived in one of them?

Loews (free entrance)

It's a little like coming to Las Vegas even though still in Europe. This american luxury hotel offers a compact set of all the different games you didn't know existed although the gamblers here seems to have done nothing else than sitting in Casinos for the last ten years. And, best of all, everything's free to look at, but it's gonna cost you to participate! I can recommend the monstrous megamachines where you need two strong arms just to get the cherrys moving. Don't miss the washing rooms just around the corner where you can wipe your hands with nice cotton towels that goes directly to the laundry after you've used it! On your way back to the machines you can enjoy the entertainment in the pianobar for free. Unvaluable knowledge is that the "Monaco Grand Prix" Formula One race is passing under the hotel. Shorts allowed - but no baggage deposit.

Cafe de Paris (free entrance)

Could someone please explain to me why this marvellous cafe is wasting valuable area with this boring casino? It is - like almost every famous building in Monaco including Le Casino - owned by the "Societé de Bains de Mère" the monagasque bathing society that in reality is the prince's personal holding company. It has no own soul as it is situated in the shadow of the big casino in both geografy and splendor. But, still it is worth a visit if you can't find the real casino 20 meters away...
