This is a poem Kim wrote for school
By now, I guess you have figured out that my son is no ordinary child. This is quite true. He is an extraordinary young man who perceives the world unlike most of us. Most of his behaviors would be considered odd to most of us who are non-autistics. But to our family he is a very special boy that we love with all our hearts and could not imagine him any other way except for the way he is. Most parents of autistic children seem to initially wonder what they did in their lives to deserve such a curse as being the parent of an autistic child. But eventually they come to realize, at least most of them, that it is not a curse but a blessing. I often wonder what kind of parent I would have been if I did not have an autistic son. Probably not a very good one. But you find out things about yourselves you may never have known. It occurs to me that God ( or whatever you choose to call him ) has a way of placing these special children with the right people, most of the time. My sister sent me a fictional story about this.
