Something to Think About

My favorite television show is Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. It airs in my area at 8PM on Friday, and 2PM on Saturday. I love the way the humor, myth, and history all tie together. However, I also know that there are alot of people who do not watch the show, possibly because they are scared off by the Greek mythology involved. Well don't worry. Here at Agneta's Oasis, we're gonna teach you some basic Greek mythology so you can appreciate, as well as enjoy Hercules.

In the beginning Gaea (earth) and Uranus (heavens) had some kids called the Titans. The Titans in turn had kids. Of this second generation, Zeus became god of the skies, Posiedon the seas, and Hades the underworld. Zeus loved to do the nasty, and the number of his resulting offspring reflects this trend. Zeus had many wives and one night stands which resulted in such notable gods as Persephone, Apollo, Ares, Aphrodite, Perseus, and my favorite, Hercules.

Hercules was an exception in the strata of godliness because his mother was not a god or Zeus' wife at the time Hera, but a mortal named Alcmene. So he was only a half-god. To compensate, he was gifted with superhuman strength. Obviously, Hera did not like Herc, he came from a mortal woman. So she decided to make Herc pay and sent 12 obstacles at him. These would come to be known as the 12 Herculean Labors. She also killed Herc's wife and kids.

Eventually, Herc, after toiling for years to defeat Hera's schemes, was killed in a romance gone bad. See, times don't change. But we will not dwell on this. Upon Herc's death, Zeus made him immortal by placing him amongst the stars.
