FALKLAND ISLANDS


The Falkland Islands are a group of some 200 islands lying 300 miles east of southern Argentina and Chile and 1,000 miles north of Anarctica.

These are Magellanic Penguins which nest in burrows in the ground away from the sea.

This is a colony of Gentoo Penguins. There are dozens of these colonies of varying size on every island we visited.

These are King Penguins, the largest and least in number on the islands.

LOOK AT THAT FACE! This is a young Elephant Seal which are very prevalent on the islands.

This is a Rockhopper Penguin (our favorite). This game little bird survives the roughest seas dashing them against the rocks upon which they leap out and hop from rock to rock to the top of the cliff (some over 1,000 feet) where they nest.
