The following is a design by Mohammed EZZEDINE, who is originally from Ouled Bou Ali, Kerkennah. It represents a bridge between Kerkennah and the mainland Sfax. It is the dream of every islander to get linked to the mainland. During wintertime, the service of the ferry stops when there are bad weather conditions. The Kerkennians have long been hoping for a bridge to link them to Sfax. This would help the struggling economy which is highly dependent on fishing.
Many people are also opposed to the idea of a bridge, arguing that it would disrupt the peace and quiet of the island. Adding more hotels is thought to cause the island to lose its charm and become polluted. However, a bridge is obviously a big investment and several other transportation and infractructural improvements have to be made first. Coming to kerkennah only in the summer would not expose its its transportation problems throughout the whole year. Living in Kerkennah for twenty years, I know how hard it is to take the ferry in the wintertime and wish that one day Kerkennah gets linked to the mainland.
Mohammed EZZEDDINE has called his design: Transport is the key to sustainable and global development.
