Death of Habib Achour (March 12, 1999)

Habib Achour the leader of the popular federation of trade unions (UGGT) have passed away on the 12th of March in Kerkennah. The funeral, that took place in Kerkennah on Saturday the 13th have witnessed the presence of many political figures and thousands of citizens.

A new oil well discovered, Cherguie II (October19, 1998)

The British company TBS (Tunisian British Services) has succeded to find a new oil well that is supposed to generate a big amount (still unknown) of oil. They called it Cherguie II and is located about 500 meters from the beach.

A major repair to the main road. (October18, 1998)

Last September of 1998, a project that aims renewing the whole infrastructure of the main road and enlarging it has started. The first step of the project is the one relating the "Zone Touristique" to Aouled Yaneg. The second step of the project is the main road between Sidi Yousef and Elattaya. The new road is expected to be a three-lane road. This new project has brought happiness and delight to the islanders and especially to the taxi drivers and other few automobile riders too.
This new project is also expected to reduce the number of accidents, that islanders have witnessed a lot of during the summer season.

A new look to the port of Sidi Youssef. (September 28, 1998)

Construction has started about eight months ago and is still going on in the port of Sidi Youssef. The construction is supposed to be finished by the beginning of the new year 1999. The entrance of the port is starting to look better and more attractive to visitors. The project should hopefully be finished before the beginning of the "Festival de Poulpes" that will take place on March 20, 21 and 22, 1999.

Panorama is to buy the Grand Hotel. (September 23, 1998)

There is a rumor that the British agency Panorama is willing to buy the Grand Hotel from SOMVIK. The Grand Hotel, located in the "zone touristique" of Sidi Fredj, has been working mainly with Panorama. The Grand welcomes thousands of tourists every year mainly from Britain. The business goes on for seven months, from the month of April until the end of October.
