Chippewa Flag

A little on MY tribe, the Chippewa/Cree of Montana

My immediate family

I don't know where to start, well my tribe is becoming a lost tribe, I know that for sure, so it is VERY hard to try to research. Many of the family members are mixed with something else not full.
Geronimo

(Geronimo)

Our tribe finally found a home to a reservation named, "Rocky Boy's" reservation. It is in honor of Chief Rocky boy, a Chippewa from further East. The reservation was founded after his death in 1916.
I come from a small tribe, the Chippewa/Cree, which is really 2 nomadic tribes that combined into one in the search for a home in Montana. We are known as the "land less Indians". My tribe are labled one of the "plains" Indians, the kind that lived in tipis.

As far as my immediate family history goes, I was told that our family, the "Sangrey's" were honored on the reservation because a french fur trader by the name of Sangrey married one of our women and gave the tribe goods.

Sitting Bull

(Sitting Bull)

As for me, I know a "little" of the native language. Of course, I know some of the cuss words. :)

HERE IS A TRADITIONAL RECIPE FOR MANY PLAINS INDIAN TRIBES

Fry Bread

4 cups white flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon baking powder
Combine all ingredients. Add about 1 1/2 cups lukewarm water and knead until dough is soft but not sticky. Shape dough into balls the size of a small peach. Shape into patties by hand; dough should be about l/2 inch thick. Make a small hole in the center of the round.

Fry one at a time in about l inch of hot lard or shortening in a heavy pan. Brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels and serve hot with honey, powdered sugar, cinnimon and sugar, jam, or just some butter melted on with a bowl of home made chili.

For a MEAL, "I fix an Indian Taco". For topping, u add everything that goes on a regular taco. For a less dry taste, I use chili instead of hamburger meat. So get lettuce, hamburger or chili, tomatoes, sour cream, shredded cheese, and hot sauce, picante, salsa, whatever u prefer, eat with a fork and knife, enjoy!
