Interesting facts:

Abegweit is a local native word on Prince Edward Island meaning "craddled by the waves"

The Abegweit succeeded a ferry of the same name that had sailed the route since 1947.

This vessel was the first in Canada to allow roll through loading and unloading of railway cars.

The engine monitoring system was adapted from a system developed for NASA spacecraft, and it allows the engineers ro dectect small changes in performance in any of the six main engines.

One of the main teething problems with this vessel occured on December 19, when a set-screw in the propeller controls came loose, leaving the port propeller stuck at full ahead.  The Abegweit then ran onto a shoal in Borden harbour, and seventy-four passengers had to be taken ashore by fishing vessel

The Borden to Cape Tormentine service was discontinued after the opening of the Confederation bridge in 1997.

Current status: Sold to Accrual Investment Inc. and renamed Accrued Mariner and was sailed to Galveston, Texas to be readied for resale.
