Named in honour of Sir Frederick B.T. Carter, a former speaker in the Newfoundland House of Commons in 1867

The first cargo transported to Newfoundland  on the Carter was the first standard guage locomotive to ever run in Newfoundland

The Carter, at one point in time, was listed as the largest train ferry in the Guiness Book of world records.

The ferry was sold in 1986 to Nordo Link.
