Saturday 7/26
Day 2: Barkerville, Pringe George & New Hazelton
Woke up at 5:00 a.m. as it was clear sky and nice sunrise. We drove north on
highway 1 and as we drove by 100 Mile House, Williams Lake
and Quesnal before turning east on
26 to go to Barkerville.
This is a historic town that has buildings still standing that were built duiring 1860-70. Family admission is $11 for 2
days. We ate breakfast at the Wake Up Jake's Cafe which our son Jacob thought
was a good idea. Included in this town is a chinatown, church, school,
dentist, doctor, saloon, brewery, bakery and general store among other
buildings. It is a good place to go for a day and we will probably go back
some day.
We headed back on 26 to Quesnal and then went north on 97 to Prince George .
This is an industrial town with 80,000 people in the middle of British Columbia.
After an hour or two we went west on 16, as there are many small towns along the way
that include Vanderhoof, Burns Lake and Houston. We finally stopped at
Smithers in the afternoon for something to eat as this is a nice town and a good place to rest and walk along the main
street. We also stopped in Moricetown to watch the Indians catch fish with
their nets along the Skeena River. The forest service
ranger is there watching them as Indians pull the fish from the river with spears. We saw a couple fish jump back into the river after being laid
on the rocks. We also stopped at New Hazelton and drove thru the Indian Village that had some
interesting totem poles. We looked in the doorway of a building and saw
several totem poles that were being carved. It got dark at 10:00 and we eventually stopped near Kitwanga at 11:00 and
slept in the truck that night. Drove 700 miles today and 1000 total for 2 days.
