1997 Alaska, British Columbia & Yukon Trip

Saturday 8/2

Day 9: Ninilchik, Seward & Anchorage

We would leave the Captain Cook area around 7:30 and go south toward Homer today. We stopped at Ninilchik around 8:30 as this is a little Russian community that is right off the water.

  • Russian Church There is also a little Russian church there on top off the hill over-looking the water and little community. We continued on to Anchor Point which claims to be the farthest western part of U.S. land that is accesssable by road without using a boat or airplane. Anchor Point is a small busy town with a nice beach. We reached Homer around 10:30 and spent most of the time on the spit. There are many small shops ,fishing charters, tours and restaurent on each side of the spit and there is nice scenery that is surrounded by mountains. It was a nice day with the sun out and although it was cloudy looking southeast at the Alaska Peninsule, there was a good view of the southern tip of Kenai Peninsula.
  • South of Anchorage We started to drive out to a small town called Kachemak but turned around after 10 miles as it was going to be 60 miles of gravel road. There were some nice houses along this area that also had nice views of the water inlet. We also found a small house that was a little larger than a dog house. It was about 3 ft tall along the gravel road as we took a picture of Jacob standing next to it.

We headed back towards Anchorage around 1:30

  • The weather was sunny, and blue skies most of the day as we only hit a couple patches of fog in the morning by the coast. Jacob's new house in Alaska We stopped at Crow Creek on the way back to Anchorage as this was about 5 miles south of the city. This was a public gold mine where people could pan for gold, it also had a duckpond, flower garden, old tools and houses. We got into Anchorage around 6:30 pm and went to the Tidal Wave Used Book Store and The Greek Corner Restaurent that were both located on the same road. The book store was well stocked with books on Alaska and I wished that we had more time but they closed at 7:00. The restaurent was the best food that we had on the trip and it helped that they also had outside dining. It was a nice day out as the sky was still bright blue when we were done eating at 10:00. We drove north at this point out of town on highway 1 as I wanted to keep driving for a little while. We drove for about an hour and stopped at Matanuska Glacier Rec. Area as there were some walk-in campsights available and we stayed here for the night. I drove 500 miles today and 4350 total in nine days.
