I woke up at 4:30 and started driving toward Whitehorse. We debated about going to Haines, Alaska again but decided against it since we didn’t have much time to get to Prince Rupert (2 days). We are thinking about going thru southern Alaska next year and we would visit Haines then. Cindy drove from Haines Junction to just outside of Whitehorse where she was pulled over by police for swerving. He let us go with no ticket as we told him we would be stopping in Whitehorse to get coffee and change drivers. We got into Whitehorse around 11:00 and I finally decided to have the oil changed, the mechanic said that there was no problem with the truck, the oil was just dirty but everything was ok. While waiting for our oil change we went to the visitors center right across the street and then walked around town which is a nice town of about 20,000 people. It’s population is larger than the rest of the population of the Yukon. We ate lunch at the Sausage Deli which was a nice place to eat as they had many selections of meat and cheese to choose from. We will stop there again the next time we are in Whitehorse. We liked the town as we also stopped at a couple used book stores. We found a set of kids books from David Skidd , who is from Whitehorse and it's the first set of books that Jacob found interesting and would read on his own.
We traveled on to Watson Lake junction and stopped at the sign forest to see all of the license plates that had been left here. We never did find Kent, Washington; although we have seen one in the National Geographic from our home town. People leave all kinds of signs here, we even saw a spice rack with someone's name on it and also a framed work of cross stitch. We ate lunch at a nearby road house which was not very good as we had a hard time getting service from the waitress who had some of her friends at another table. After finishing our meal we backtracked ten miles to go south on Highway 37 and start back to British Columbia.
We stopped for the night at Boya Lake Provencial Park at 10:00 p.m. and Cindy made spaghetti for dinner which was probably the second best dinner that we had next to the greek restaurant. We had stayed here on the way up and liked it and will come back again someday. It was quiet, clean, right next to the lake and also right off of the main road. We now realized that we were on the end of the trip and going to the area that was most anticipated, the Queen Charlotte Islands. I drove 700 miles and 5750 total in 11 days.
