We woke up in our hotel room in Craig on Prince of Wales Island at 4:00 am. Drizzly, foggy weather. We took the paved road to Hollis and arrived there at 5:00 am for the 6:00 am sailing to Ketchikan. The ferry ride was the roughest one of our trip. A larger ferry might have had a smoother sailing. It was foggy and windy. We got into Ketchikan at 9:15 am. and stopped at the Plaza Mall for breakfast at McDonald's and to get film.
We drove about two and half miles south of town to the Saxman Indian Village. There were several totem poles, a carving shed, two giftshops and a clan house in this village. We walked into the carving shed where the totem carvers were at work. The room was packed with people from a cruise ship tour. One Indian gave a little speech and answered questions. They were working on a huge totem pole made of red cedar that had only three knots in the whole tree, which is very rare. This totem was being commissioned by the owner of the Indy 500 in Indianapolis and cost $2500/foot. They said it takes about 2 weeks to carve one foot and carvers depending on their experience charge $500-2500/foot. Totem poles carved here are sent all over the country. The giftshop was packed with tourists as well. We stopped at the clan house, but they were in the middle of a presentation and would not let us in. Later we realized we were suppose to pay an admission fee in the giftshop.
We continued farther south on the South Tongass Highway and stopped to take pictures of some waterfalls. The road came to an end at a gravel parking lot that had a sign that said "private property, keep out." There were a couple tour buses parked here and we saw a boardwalk that disappeared into the tree. Dale was curious and so we went for a walk. A short boardwalk came out at some buildings. The first of which appeared to have a hippie character inside. As we went around the building I realized this was a dummy and we had found some sort of musuem. We snooped around some of the buildings and realized this was the old George Inlet Cannery. The giftshop was full of people buying stuff before their bus took off without them. One lady asked if we were with her group or Steve's. We told her Steve's. Then she got all excited because Steve's bus was getting ready to leave. We finally whispered to her, that we had just walked in on our own. I bought a few items and the clerk wished us a nice cruise. Jacob found this all very amusing. On our way back to the parking area, the lady who had asked us who's tour we were on, showed us an eagle's nest near the boardwalk.
On our way back into town we saw sign that caught our eye, Hole-in-the Wall Bar. Looking through the trees you could see a dock with a small bar on it. Driving back into town around 2:00 pm we parked near Creek Street. This is a well-known area along the Ketchikan Creek that used to be the redlight district. Now it is full of tourist shops, galleries, restaurants and homes. All of the buildings are built on stilts over the creek. We especially liked the Parnasus Bookstore. We took the funicular tram for a dollar to the Westmark Cape Fox Lodge which overlooks Creek Street and the city. A young kid operated the tram and told us about how they buildt it. We split up for lunch and shopping. Jacob and I ate at the cafe below the Parnasus Bookstore and Dale went to the Gilmore Hotel and ate at the Keg and Chowder House on Front Street. Jacob found anoither Ben Franklin store, but this one didn't seem to have as many souvenirs. It rained off and on all afternoon.
At 6:00 pm we decided to go back to the Plaza Mall which closes at 8:00 pm. Dale bought some jeans at the Bon Marche. We ate dinner at a place across from the ferry terminal called The Galley. They served a combination of pizza, Chinese and American food. We went to the ferry terminal and waited to board at 10:00 pm. It rained all night on the ferry. We had a cabin for the night. It was large for a ferry cabin with two bunkbeds, a bathroom with a shower and room to actually move around. We tried to get to bed as soom as we could, because we knew we would be woken up around 6:00 am by the captain on the intercom.
