Welcome to Tanzania
Home of my penpal Sarah

Tanzania is made up of the three islands of Zanzibar, and the mainland which was formerly known as Tanganyika; they were united to form one country in 1964. The capital city is Dar es Salaam, the official languages are English and Swahili. As far as religion goes, there are over 30% Animist, 35% Sunni Islam, and 20% Roman Catholic. My penpal, however, is a Shia Muslim, so I suppose she fits into that unnamed 15%. There are more than 120 different cultures in Tanzania, isn't that unbelievable? Over 70% of the labour force is involved in farming, and the cash crops include coffee and cotton. The port of Tanga is Tanzania's fourth largest city, not far from Tanga are some ancient burial sites and limestone caves.
The flag has a broad black stripe. The two narrow yellow stripes running parallel represent the country's mineral resources. The green respresents the fertile land, and blue, the Indian ocean.

I had been wondering how to address the topic of Islam, being a very important topic since Sarah is a Muslim. I know a few bits and pieces that she's told me, and I've picked up from books I've read, but I don't know enough to give a decent explanation. However, I had the unbelievable luck to stumble across Leila's Page which has lots of detail about the Islamic religion, and related topics, while still being easy to read and understand. If you are interested in knowing more, I strongly suggest you have a look around her page.
