SOME READING:
Koh Samui has been a backpackers destination
since late 70´s. Today tourists from the whole
world go to this "easygoing" paradise. It´ located
in the Gulf of Siam and surrounded by over sixty
other Islands, some small and inhabeted, some
bigger ;
Koh Pha-ngan, Koh Tao (divers island) and
Ang Tong Islands, National marine park.
The town on Samui is named Nathon. You find
Banks, Post, shops etc. here, but there is not a
place, where you should stay and there are many
exchange-offices all around the island.
Things change:
I went to Samui first time May 1990. Electrical
powercuts were so common, you didn´t even
notice them. Of course prices were lower (Khao
phad gai, fried rice with chicken costed 15 bath)
But "falang" (Thai for tourists) means money and
today Samui is big buisness. I hope that Samui
stay at least a little more relaxed then Phuket and
Pattaya but time will show...
BEACHES IN SAMUI:
Most beaches has white sand and fringed with coconut palms. Many bungalows / hotels are located just a couple of meters from the beach. Here are the most popular:
CHAWENG: A 7 km long beach in Northeast of Samui. The most popular and developed. You can rent anyhing from really simple bungalows to a five star hotelroom.
LAMAI: Not as long but more quite and very charmful. Located in Soatheast of Samui.
MAE NAM and BO PHUT: Two beaches in the North. You can find cheap bungalows here. Close to Airport, Pier and Big Buddha.
A FEW TIPS:
-Use a lot of Sun-screen on the beach. I´ve seen a lot of tomato-looking people in the Samui-evnings. It HURTS...
-Go on fishing trip or a trip to Koh Tao / Phangan. Just ask at any travel-agency.
-Buy clothes in Bangkok. Better prices and a lot more there.
-Try some REAL Thai food. 90 % of the food hotels serve ain´t Thai food. All thai food ain´t extremly spicy, just ask. Lamai food center is cheap (and a simple place) but the food is good.
I recommend a Coconut-curry soup with chicken or fish, a stuffed omelette and maybe a fruitsalad pancake with icecream for dessert.
Messing with drugs is not only bad for your health.
Thai prisons ain´t hotelrooms...
Remember that HIV / AIDS exists even on Samui.
