A Short
Biography of Ms Montserrat Caballé
Ms Montserrat Caballé was born in Barcelona. She
is one of the most talented sopranos ever and her singing techique is admirable. A hard
worker, she has sung at the orders of conductors such as Bernstein, Von Karajan, Levine,
Mehta, Solti... and has shared the stage with other first-class artists such as Josep
Carreras, Plácido Domingo, Marilyn Horne, Alfredo Kraus or Luciano Pavarotti.
Ms Caballé enrolled as a student at El Liceu Conservatory and took
private lessons as well. After singing in Switzerland and Germany for some time, she
returned to Barcelona, where she made her debut at El Liceu Opera House in 1962. A
few important changes took place in her personal life too: Her brother Carles became her
manager; also, she married Mr Bernabé Martí, a tenor himself.
In 1965 she took over Marilyn Horne´s commitment to sing Donizetti´s Lucrezia
Borgia (Horne had fallen ill) at New York´s Carnegie Hall. The occasion
was a great success and launched Ms Caballé´s international career. She travelled all
over the world singing and recording operas and, following the evolution of her voice
towards maturity, she was learning new roles all the time. She has performed about 100 of
these (an incredibly huge repertoire for a singer!) She has had many glorious nights, for
the benefit of music and her audiences. Most critics agree that her performances of
Bellini´s Norma are just perfect.
But Ms Caballé is not easily satisfied, and she has devoted much time
and energy to study rare operas (which had been more or less forgotten by producers,
critics and audiences alike). The results have often been a hit. Surprisingly, Ms Caballé
manages to find the time to sing with modern artists such as the unfortunate Freddie
Mercury or the composer Vangelis. No wonder Ms Caballé has won many important
awards everywhere!
The best you can do now is run to your Hi-Fi set and play some of
Ms Caballé´s records. Of course, you don´t have to listen to one opera after another.
Try a selection of showstoppers (interesting bits from longer works.) And do not
worry about the lyrics or the story for the moment. Just listen to the music and the
voice and enjoy yourself. With time, you´ll LOVE opera and will be eager for
more!
