View of carved stone wall beside Porte Cochere of Le Meridien Hotel, Bali
View of carved stone wall beside the 'Porte Cochere' of the Le Meridien Hotel, Bali Nirwana Resort;the sequence starts with the 'artist' first drawing the image using charcoal directly onto the constructed paras stone wall; when the image is approved this is then followed by the first of the stone carvers who chisels through the charcoal outline to create the initial massing of the carving; this is then followed up by a different set of stone carvers who specialize in chiselling the fine details seen in the final wall carving above. These exterior carved walls using the soft grey 'paras ukir' stone are usually left unsealed to allow the wall to attract moss, algae so that in just a few years the wall looks as if it has been there for 50 years.
