One hot humid day in Surabaya, a couple of westerners, walking down a main street, spotted a roti maker stall(bread maker) on the side of the road. The couple being quite hungry at the time decided to stop and buy some bread.
They walked up to the vendor to see the man making roti.
They were shocked to see the man weraing no shirt and his big belly was hanging over his pants. It was a hot day, the stall was very dusty and dirty because it was on the side of the road.
The roti man was in the process of making the bread (similar to the old way of making pizza, throwing it
up into the air and then catching it). However the Roti man had added his own personnel touch to the process, instead of using his hands he was using his belly to catch the roti.
He was throwing it up into the air and then sticking his belly
out to catch the falling roti.
The girl watched this exhibition with disgust. The roti maker's belly was sweaty and covered in dust from the road.
Not only did the roti maker use his belly to catch the roti
he also used his belly for kneading the roti.
The couple were shocked and told the roti maker that this was
the most unhygenic and disgusting method of making roti they
had ever seen. They added that they would never buy food from this stall and would also advise people not to come to this stall to buy food. They told the man that you cant prepare food like that it is unhealthy, disgusting.
How can you make bread using a part of your body other
than your hands. You cant use your belly to make food.
The roti maker took offence and replied telling the couple to return the next day, so that they could
watch him make doughnuts.
