A Counterfeiter's Cave

In the 1830's a band of counterfeiters set up a small operation in a cave located in the steep bank of a ravine that ran from the north shore of Little Green Lake in Green Lake Country.

A crude wooden door covered the extrance to the cave that housed a complete counterfeiter's outfit and forge. Smoke from the forge was diverted into a long tunnel that led to an old stump where it was dispersed into the air.

This operation produced half-dollars that were put into circulation in Green Bay by dealing with Indian traders.

After about 10 years of operation authorities tracked down the forgers and put them out of business.
