Two Other 'Out of the Way' Places

Two other "out of the way" places you should try to visit, if you ever
get the urge to go to California:
Surf Beach: Just North of Santa Barbara & East of Lompoc, one of the
last remaining places on the california coast where you can (during the
week) stroll down 3 miles of WIDE beach, totally alone & undisturbed!
Also they have sunsets that are too gorgeous to be real--people come
from town by the dozens just to watch the sunset, and then go back home!
Blue Rock--about 40 miles north of a town called Pearblossom, North of
the San Gabriel mountains, abotu a mile form a place called "Saddle back
Butte" (North of L.A.). Basically almost exactly out in the *middle* of
the Mojave desert, this mesa-like place is the highest point out there,
so you can see literally for 60 miles or more in any direction. Usually
there are a lot of hawks flying around the place, too. And, even
better--at night! I mean, stars like they never told you you could see!
It's where I first discovered that there is a band of stars going across
the horizon that is thick enough to see. I had always thought the stars
were pretty randomly distributed out there, but no way is that ture! A
place to stay while you're wandering around trying to find this place is
the Pearblossom Inn, on Highway 138, in Pearblossom. One of those quaint
little 6-room "David Lynch" type of roadside motels.
