La Citadelle

near Ste Foy-La-Grande, Bordeaux, and Bergerac

renting our holiday home in the Dordogne

News update:

September 2007

Our last visitors for this year have now left and we are preparing the house and grounds for winter. We have already closed the pools and cut back the vines where they were threatening to grow into the gutters on the farmhouse. We have lovely weather for doing these jobs. The first three weeks of September have been glorious; in fact we have had the best weather of this summer in September, a real Indian summer.

This was the tenth year in which we have rented out La Citadelle; all in all it has been a pleasant and interesting ten years. We have welcomed visitors from as far away as the USA and Nova Scotia, and from all walks of life, including an ex world flyweight champion boxer and a privy councillor. We try to keep our prices at a reasonable level, even though there are houses locally that cost considerably more, and, we are told, don’t offer the same level of accommodation and service. We spent many years renting houses ourselves in France when our sons were young and now try to provide the sort of accommodation that we were always looking for. Judging by the comments in our visitors’ book we succeed!

This year we have been concentrating on tidying up some of the more out-of-the-way areas in the grounds and have cut back large areas that had become overrun with brambles. We now have a local farmer coming in with his tractor to dispose of the rest on the boundaries of the property, and next year all we will have to do is the stop them reappearing!

We have already taken two bookings for 2008, and expect the next tranche of enquiries when the Chez Nous brochure is published in November. If you want to be sure of a particular date, you should try to get your booking in before then!

La Citadelle is a former farm near Ste Foy-La-Grande and Bergerac, in the Dordogne in south-west France. The main farmhouse sleeps 8 and a baby (or two), and is set in two acres of garden, surrounded by 25 acres of woods which we own. The house overlooks our lake, which is ideal for swimming, carp fishing, and boating. As well as the lake, swimmers have exclusive use of the large pool.  The stunning position is totally secluded but not isolated. There are panoramic views across lake, garden and fields to our woods in all directions. It is well-positioned for access by ordinary road, motorway, and Motorail. Bordeaux's excellent international airport is only 45 miles away and Bergerac only 15. There are now low-cost flights to Bergerac and Bordeaux from most parts of the British Isles; we provide all linen and towels, in order to make flying very practical. Golf nearby is excellent, and there is also a wide range of activities locally for adults and young people of all ages.

We let the farmhouse, usually from May to September, but it may be available fully heated for longer stays outside this season. It has beds for up to eight adults in four large double or twin bed-rooms upstairs, and it has another large room on the ground floor which we have furnished as a nursery, but which can hold another child or two if you arrange it at the time of booking, or which, also by arrangement, we can furnish for a disabled guest.

<
picture of house The modern fitted kitchen includes electric cooker, fridges, dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, and the usual range of small appliances. It also has a table and seating for 8, although guests usually eat at the picnic tables on the lawn overlooking the lake: these tables are shaded by giant catalpa trees which carry great swags of fragrant blossom during June and July.

The large sitting-room has three sofas plus other comfortable seating, as well as a television, DVD/CD player, PlayStation 2, and a very well-stocked library; there is a large supply of family DVDs and PS2 games.  The room has two pairs of glazed doors opening out onto a terrace and lawn shaded by a huge Constantinople Mimosa tree which is covered in fragrant mauve blossom in the summer.

The house is comfortably furnished and equipped for eight, plus a baby; we may allow up to a maximum of 10 people if there are a number of young children in your party. In this case we make a small charge to go towards the cost of additional equipment and cleaning.

All the floors are polished chestnut or tiles, and all the windows have shutters. The aspect is very light and airy, with large windows and glazed double doors all the way round. The doors all lead straight out onto small terraces and the surrounding lawns. For pictures of La Citadelle, including interiors CLICK HERE.

All fuel and water bills,  bed linen, personal towels, and swimming towels are included. We live in La Citadelle's Owl Barn, some distance and screened from the house, and so are on hand to sort out any problems you may have, and provide any help that you need. We also service the pool daily to keep it in perfect condition.

Please note that there is no phone in the house so don't forget to bring your mobile and charger with you.

We are not able to accept pets.

Availability and prices for the property (not per person) per week for 2008 are shown below. Note that bookings tend to be heavy in the middle of the summer, and we are unlikely to accept one-week bookings at that time.

Telephone or email us (send mail) to confirm availability and to make a provisional booking. We will then send (or email) you a booking form. Click HERE to download a booking form, for you to complete and return to us with a deposit of 25% within a few days to secure your booking. If you would rather, let us know and  we will email or post you a form

Bookings run from 4 pm on Saturday to 10 am on Saturday.

For the winter months, La Citadelle
may be available centrally-heated: ASK

Payment is accepted in sterling drawn on a UK bank, or by draft or electronic transfer in pounds sterling, Euros, or US dollars with any transfer and exchange charges paid by the sender.

Early Autumn is warm enough for swimming and usually a lovely time of year, and the central heating means that there are usually people here over New Year. (Our middle son and daughter-in-law spent the last week of their honeymoon here and our eldest son was here through the big storm which ended the old millennium in France with a bang!).

We did have a paper brochure, but we have phased this out because it is possible to show far more pictures and details on the Web. Follow the link below to find out all about La Citadelle and the Dordogne. Use your BACK button, or the "enquire" link on the index, if you want to get back here.

La Citadelle
has been advertised in Owners in France, and is now advertised in Chez Nous. See their brochure or website for insurance and discounted travel facilities.
