Christmas?

The Christams song of yester-year
is growing kind of dim.
The cry of money wasted
forestalls the thought of Him.
The food, the house, the car we drive,
the clothes, and all that's nice
are purchased with the fruits of labor.
-Call it money; that's the price.-
The good we do for other folks;
it really makes us pause.
We grind our teeth and glare about
then curse poor Santa Clause.
We buy the junk we do not want
(just like we did before)
and home we go, all tuckered out,
to blame the one who owns the store.
We are searching for a reason
for committing money-cide.
We hate to admit it's the good in us
that comes only at Christmastide.
We like to think that Junior
has forgotten about his Christ.
It's our excuse for being tight
and not doing things that are nice.
Santa is just the messenger
who covers all the earth.
He brings us all glad tidings
of the 'Morrow's glorious birth.
Now, if you don't really have the dough,
then don't go in too deep.
The Christ, you thought forgotten,
loves you for the thoughts you keep.
