"La Canastera" or Luxury?
In terms of buses, well, it depends on whether or not one wants to experience the true way in which the locals travel, or travel in a luxurious bus and miss the real stuff!
    I think the reason for traveling is to get the chance to truly see and experience another dimension of life.  To me, traveling in a regular bus while in that particular country, would give you the feeling of being a part of the land itself, simply because by traveling the way everyone else travels in Guatemala one will actually experience the "good" things about traveling in a regular Guatemalan bus.

    While traveling on a "canastera", you will experience the true sensations of what it is like to do business - Guatemalan style.  Some people might bring into the bus what you might never expect to see on a bus in your particular city in North America or Europe.  For instance, I got to see a young man give his sit to a very old lady - something you might not see everyday in your location.  Or a box of chickens which where eager to get to the other end of the trip. Believe me, with all of this in mind, if you get all your vaccinations before you leave on your trip you will be fine.
 
    This is the "Canastera" on our way to Panajachel. (Notice the person sleeping next to me, now is that real or what? Unless you are a Bill Gates super rich guy and own a mansion on DreamLand and really want nothing to do with real life).
